Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

    From Skype Help:

Select General settings gear icon Settings.
Choose from the following settings to make your changes:

Note: You can access your Skype settings from any platform or device, but not all settings are available to change on every platform.

Account & Profile icon Account & Profile
    Control your profile picture visibility.
View and manage your account information.
    General settings gear icon General
    Change your language.
Choose your startup and close options. View available Skype Accessibility Keyboard Shortcuts. (Not available in Skype for Web or mobile)

Skype Help makes no mention of "Hot Keys". I don't have the above option available to me on Skype 8.51.0.92

l am also on Skype 8.51.0.92 , don't seem to have option to close hotkeys either. don't you go similar problems when you type and chat the same time? all require 2 keys, eg 'command'+ or 'shift' + so guess when typing same time avoid pressing 2 keys simultaneously right?

That's pretty well the best solution, just as you summarized.

Why or what are you typing if you're already talking when using Skype???

Or maybe just check on which key combos to definitely avoid:
