Safe Sites to Download Software From for Older Operating Systems
I have an Imac with OS 10.8.5 Mountain Lion. It's 24" Early 2008 and 2.8GHz Intel Core Duo with 4GB 800 MHZ DDR2RAM. I'd like to know which are the safest sites to download from for older versions of various software for my computer. Thanks a lot.

The ONLY safe site for a software is their official site, everything else has the potential of being sketchy. You have to figure this out on your own at the risk of getting some malware or something. Your machine is 11+ years old and is no longer getting any security updates and such. At some point in time, you've gotta throw the towel in and upgrade to a machine from this decade.

I just wanted to add, in case you didn't know, that iMac model can run Maximum MacOS: X 10.11.x El Capitan which is still actively supported and lots more software available.

    For more info and specs:

Good catch Patrick. Using the latest possible OS certainly opens up a few more options for software.

    @eschwartz
BTW: for both older and newer Mac software, and I know some members have rather derogatory comments and opinions about the site, but I will usually check out macupdate.com
/Download the best Mac apps : MacUpdate

I find the site works for discovering or searching for software to do something I may have in mind with it's search and look-up function, it provides: user comments, (including some that need to be taken with a grain of salt), it provides a comparison for "Similar Software", with an option to see the pricing etc., it provides a convenient direct link to the developers site, and provides info on release dates and minimum System Requirements, and often provides a link to older versions that may not even be available at the developers site, among some other benefits.

I may use the direct Download Option, and I've never had any trouble using it, but I Definitely AVOID using their
    Install Now
    w/MacUpdate Desktop
    option.

Anyway I just thought I would mention the site, but I'm sure some members will makess some comments that you will go to hell and damnation and become contaminated by Satan if you use it. But personally, as I have mentioned, I find it quite helpful and beneficial, especially the way I use it.

But why worry, Patrick, you're already there; and you know what, it hasn't affected your tremendously useful contribution to these Forums.

May the force/forums go with you

    Thanks Ian,

But I must admit that, unlike one of my fanatic sons, I was never really much of a StarWars Trekkie. (I even had to use google to find out how to spell it!!!)
But I did enjoy some of the first movies so many eons ago...

BTW: I didn't miss the derogatory bashing comments of a certain now old and forced-departed member who was helped out of here some years ago who would surley have made some caustic repetetive comment. But I see he's still doing the same thing at the local VMUG now on-line members list I took a peek at a while ago, and as sparse as it is now is and has been for the last few years, mainly due to him it seems. Definitely not missed by me at all...

    And not exactly constructive either...

I'm surprised to hear he's still around. And it looks like Mac Users Groups are becoming an endangered species. I don't know of any in our area. Why join a users group when you can join a forum?

And for that matter, a forum that has far more and more knowledgeable members and none of whom reply with a condescending remark if I may say so as it relates to the mac-forums list group.

Oh man, Patrick, you're just toying with the nerds hearts there. Trekkies are Star Trek fans, while Star Wars fans don't have a cutesy name for themselves. And Star Trek has nothing to do with Star Wars, other than both of them starting with the word Star. But your lack of appreciation for either of these is understood.

    My apologies, but not intentional.

PS: Thanks Ashwin, for the information and sorting me out.
