    cleaning up an iMac
My iMac is a few years old now, and is getting slow and cranky. I notice that there are a few clean-up programmes advertised - can anyone recommend which is the best to use (or alternatively, which ones not to use!).

I have AVG virus protection/firewall, if that's relevant.

    Thanks.

    Tony

Hi Tony - please provide some more information: 1) What iMac do you own (be specific, i.e. year and season); 2) What macOS is installed; and 3) How large is your HD and how much storage is free?

First, you should remove AVG VP/FW - AV software is not needed on a Mac machine and often 'hogs' resources and causes other problems - removal may require a specific method/software from the AVG people, so check. Also, if you're behind a router, a much better firewall should already be in place; finally, macOS has it's own firewall found in System Preferences -> Security & Privacy.

Second, download OnyX from Titanium Software - obtain the version specific to your macOS and simply run in the default mode. Let me end there for you to consider these options and for others to 'chime in' - good luck. Dave

This could be one very big reason your iMac is slow. Many anti-virus programs are notorious resource hogs...AND...you don't need an anti-virus programs (been discussed a "gillion" times)! There are no Mac OS viruses in the wild...thus not necessary to run an anti-virus app (whcih slows the computer as well).

One very good "maintenance app" is called "Onyx" (and it's free)!

Edit: You beat me this time Dave!

Hi Nick - well, a rarity! Just by one minute - I'm usually typing too much, adding links, or images - I was expecting several of you guys would yet again 'beat me to the punch' - Dave
