What Mac App will let me control my friend MacBook?
I have a friend in another state with a Mac Book. I want to know what program will let me take control of the laptop remotely and resolve an issue they are having.

LogMeIn. It works perfectly on Mac and PC. Best of all, it's completely free. (There's a paid version, but the free one works perfectly.)

Teamviewer could work. Have you tried it?

+1 here. Teamviewer was recommended over Logmein by MacWorld and MacLife.

    +1 Teamviewer

I've had to use it multiple times to resolve issues for family and coworkers.

It's free for personal use, you can download it here:

    http://www.teamviewer.com/en/download/index.aspx

Just get the full version on both sides, and have your friend give you the ID and password to connect to his/her machine.

I've tried splashtop, various VNC clients, teamviewer, GoToMyPC, and more

Team viewer works well for one off connections.

But I've been using LogMeIn for years. IMO best solution for repeated support or remote connection to a machine that has no one in front of it.

which is funny because we use Team viewer on a vm desktop install for one of our remote instructors to gain access to our system and it has worked without problem for many years, but everyone has different experiences and like different products, at least there's choice out there for everyone!

Sorry, didn't mean it doesn't work for permanent support. Just that it's got an easy and straightforward install that you can easily talk someone through for one off support.

Rather than the logmein approach of adding a machine to your account etc

If this is a one off incident the features in iChat may be sufficient. There is a function in the Buddies menu that says "Ask to share remote screen". Quite handy for some situations depending upon what's needed.
