Any way to fix my ipod?
    Hi all,

Ok, I TRIED one day to use the app store, some silly game app, as usual that failed but I neglected to log myself out.
So Apple, in it's infinite growing ignorance, just arbitrarily upgraded my itunes without my consent, approval, or even knowledge when they did it.
I now have 12.7.4 which I DID NOT WANT AND WOULD NOT HAVE AGREED TO.
Before I even realized they did this, I popped in my ipod nano, 7th gen and added a few songs to a playlist.
Ever since then every single radio (And I bought THREE specifically to play my ipods on) just pops up a note "unrecognized device" and I can't play anything.

Oh it works on my headphones ok, and I just ordered a cable so at least I can (hopefully) use my radios that way,
just wondering if there is any way to fix this?
I do have another mac that has NOT been upgraded, I could always just use it from now on to load my pods.
(I have two, the other is 6th gen and the power button is broke so getting to a list is a royal pain. I typically just put it in, pick a list and let it play. I like the 7th gen better, bigger power button. So far hasn't broke except for this.)

I'd like to ring someones neck at apple for doing this without so much as a note. They always did in the past, "new upgrade, get it now, or no" something like that. Seems every time itunes gets UP graded, it's really a DOWN grade. Harder to use, harder to organize. (I HATE this version.)

Apple already told me there is no going back to a previous version. But I don't totally believe that. If there is a way to back up to the version before they fouled up ipods, please post a link.
Or if there is a way to fix the ipods so they play just plugging them in like they did before, even better.

    (CURSE you apple )

In the App Store, within Preferences, there is an option called Automatic Updates. If unchecked, you are notified of updates, but nothing happens. Seem like that option is turned on in your case. I don't believe that option is on by default since it's not on my relatively new MBP.

Either way, follow these instructions to downgrade back to iTunes 11.

HEY fantastic.... still reading up, but instructions look pretty straight forward.

Now... what I have read so far, (and honestly I forgot all about this forum board till your newsletter showed up. Bookmark on an old now dead computer.)

So. Version 12 of itunes really does suck. Organizing playlists is a nightmare now.

BUT... this doesn't answer the question on the ipod. My daughter is telling me once the ipod got upgraded by the new itunes I may not be able to use it at all with the older version. (Now I do have another computer with the older version, I'll test this in a bit.)

This is what I have. (Just pulled a random picture off google.)
    SP656-ipod-nano-7g-RED.png

Looking at it's "about" version 1.0.2 I don't know if this helps much. All I know is after adding songs with the new version of itunes, any radio I plug it into brings up "not supported device." What I read so far is it's basically toast. One post I found said if I reset it to default (clear everything I assume) that might fix it. Before I do, lets find out for sure.
I know I'm not the only one this happened to.

If I downgrade my itunes, and this thing is not loadable anymore, then damn, I'll keep the lousy version 12.
Again I can test this.... gotta go nextdoor, fire up the old computer and see.

Well so much for my little test.

Seems when we upgraded the OS, from what ever the last cat was to high sierra, itunes 12 must have come with it. That's how mine got upgraded. DAMN! So I do not have a way to see if my ipod will even recognize the older version until I do it.

    Unless someone else knows.

The iTunes update doesn't update the firmware on the iPod automatically, that's something you have to do manually. I've used iTunes 12 with my iPod Nano and it works fine with all the devices that it worked before, especially my very old car through both Bluetooth or wired connection. I can't begin to think why the device would suddenly not be a valid device for your speakers anymore.

Well I don't know. When this first happened I could swear I found numerous forum posts about the exact same issue. Can't find them now.
Lots of other syncing problems but I DO have itunes set to NOT auto sync with anything. First thing I set on it.

All I did was add two lousy songs to a play list. I do remember it took an awful long time before I got the ok to remove it from the computer. It was doing something bigger than adding two songs.

Just posted in the apple help forum. (Lord help us.... the least helpful place around. Not expecting a cure there.)

Hey time to revive this.... made a discovery the other day.

Now this started AFTER itunes got updated to 12. There has got to be some connection.
BUT the problem is when I put in the adapter. My ipod reads "accessory not supported."

I bought THREE radios specifically so I could plug my ipod into them. ALL THREE have the big wide plug for the previous version of ipod, gen 6 I think. I had to get an adapter for my gen 7 which uses a little bitty plug just to use it on my radios. Got this from Apple, not some third party thing, and it was darn expensive too. But it's worked fine UNTIL itunes 12 and my adding a few songs. Ever since then just putting the adapter into the ipod, before I even plug it into any radio, I get "unsupported device." WHY? It's an APPLE ADAPTER!

I bought a cable, two of my radios have an aux in jack. So this works fine. BUT the big one I got, a big tailgater with a much stronger battery, even capable of charging up the ipod while it's playing it, that one doesn't have an aux in port so now it's useless.

Is it possible that my adapter just happened to go wanky right after upgrading itunes? Suppose that could happen. Highly improbable though.

Or is something about itunes 12 that somehow changed my ipod, updated it somehow and now it just doesn't play nice with adapters anymore?

I'd suggest contacting Apple and hopefully they can help you sort out your problem.

Yea.... actually today I did. Takes a bit to get past their HORRIBLE computer answering thing.
OMG. "What device are you asking about." IPOD. "You said credit card yes or no." NO... Ipod. Apple credit correct? NO NO NO IPOD YOU MECHANICAL MORON!
Yea I do yell at those damn things. It usually comes back with "I'm having a hard time understanding you so I will get A HUMAN LIKE I SHOULD HAVE IN THE FIRST PLACE."

    lol ok, climbing down now.

    Anyway thought I'd share.

She asked exactly what was on my screen. "Unrecognized device." She said that means it's my adapter plug and nothing at all wrong with the ipod.
This makes sense since I did get a lot of milage out of it, recently had a phone plug go bad, so yea, ok, but then..... Just TRY to find on for sale on their own site.
Poor girl, kept saying sorry and thanks for my patience.... I finally had to allow her to share my screen so I could SHOW her a listing on amazon for 4.00.
I said I know this is a made in China piece of crap and I'd actually rather pay apple's over priced charge. So find it.
Well after I don't know how long, I started to look up ipod nano. They do NOT sell them anymore. So that's it Apple decides not to support an item, you will not be able to find accessories for it.
Well a search on ebay found an Apple replacement, 18.00 damaged box (I don't care.) So I'll save a bit, and hopefully this is all that was wrong with the thing.
    Easy fix.

    THEN....
    (bonus bit here.)

I asked her if she could explain to me how this HORRIBLE itunes 12 works. I've killed hours on youtube trying to figure out how to edit a playlist.

So.... I'll post instructions since I know I'm not the only one confused.
And.... there is a bad and good side to this, so worth looking.

    First the bad.
use to be click edit playlist, your library of every song you have shows up on one side, and your playlist on the other. Drag from one to what ever spot you want on your playlist.

GONE. Thank you apple for making the simple a pain.
So... click songs.... (same as library before, change the name just to screw with all our heads I guess.)
Then click any song, right click, add to playlist shows up. BUT....
All you can do is dump it in. THEN you have to go to the list, it will be at the bottom, and little by little inch it up to what ever spot you wanted.
Royal pain if you have like me, HUNDREDS of tunes in one playlist and you wanted this near the top.

    Ok, onto the good.
The older versions of itunes, and I learned this one the hard way, the ONLY proper way to add songs is go to your menu bar, click add to library, then find your song click add. NO obvious drag and drop. Do it this way or else.
THEN..... again no drag and drop. I would drag that tune I HAD on my desktop directly to a playlist... somehow either doing that or adding it twice, but itunes would suddenly, and for no explainable reason, lose all my stuff. Every tune everywhere would get a gray explanation mark and song not found.
Seems you had to stick to the rule....
Add to library, THEN click your playlist, click edit, find the tune IN your library and put it in your playlist.
Do it this way or itunes would have a massive brain fart and just lose everything.

So.... about three rounds of this (I'm a slow learner sometimes.)
I started a plain old folder on my desktop and I file my music away in there. ALL my stuff is easy to find and reload now.
Well back to itunes 12. NOW.... I can just drag entire folders onto itunes and it actually works.
I can drag a folder of say, blues in, and a playlist named blues shows up with all the songs inside.
AND no more worries about duplicate copies breaking itunes brain. It didn't.
SO... rather than their idiotic way of editing a playlist, I can now just open the playlist, drag stuff from my saved folder right to where I want it.

Finally, an actual improvement with an apple upgrade.

Nice rant, artmaker. Let me make a couple of suggestions to reduce your blood pressure.

    1. By "contact" Apple, as Patrick suggested, never call them. Use the website at apple.com, click on Support and just follow the prompts to have them call you. That way you don't have to deal with voice response systems at all. You get a call saying they have the request and to wait, followed by a human. Lovely. And you get to type in your problem, so the tech shows up with that in front of them already. Normally they call back fairly quickly. I think my longest wait has been about 5 minutes.

    2. Don't yell at voice response systems. I've installed them for operations before and they are calibrated for normal speaking volume. Yelling actually makes them worse. Most of the ones I have set up have been designed to respond to yelling by indicating that the system cannot understand what is being said and to call back to get a better connection, followed by a hang up. Sometimes people calm down and call back, other times they get wound up more. Either way, yelling doesn't help and can actually make it worse.

    BP is fine thank you.

    1. I TRIED their site. It requires the serial number of the ipod which is on the back. First thing I did when I got it was buy a case for it so I can wear the thing. And I can't get the blasted thing off without breaking it. So much for using their site, can't get past that point.

    2. I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW MUCH I DETEST AUTOMATED PHONE SYSTEMS!!!!!! HIRE some god damn help!
I TRIED with their stupid system. It asked what product, I speak clear, no accent, no speech impediment, no noise in my area, HOW does it get APPLE CREDIT from IPOD?

Some companies want your name, address, phone, account number.... then guess what the first thing a human will ask for once you get to one?
NOW WHY? Do they do this just to PlSS people off so they hang up?

Systems that hang up on you REALLY DO get my BP up! You cannot talk to, explain, reason with or even get two syllables past those idiotic machines.
Oh and ever try calling ANY home improvement store? MY GOD it will run through EVERY DAMN DEPARTMENT THEY HAVE before you might get to the right one, then sit on hold till your cut off and have to start over. They have lost so much business from me over that one.

So tricks to get past.... yelling, most of the time will get me past the useless auto bot. OR babbling.... that works sometimes too.
A string of words sometimes makes it.... support, agent, customer service, HUMAN BRAIN LIVE BEING.... Sometimes that works.
Punching in a random string of numbers sometimes works.
zeros MIGHT do it, but some companies figured that one out and will use other means to get past the auto bot.
A site I found was good for a long time...
GetHuman: Call Companies and Fix Customer Service Issues Faster

Seriously, hire some people at min wage, "Hi how may I direct your call." HOW hard can that be? How much time did that take?

My very first job back when I was in HS included covering the stores phones. We were not allowed to let it ring more than TWICE. We were not allowed to just say hang on... or hold... it's one moment please while I (and tell them what your about to do, get a price, get a manager, what ever.)
THEN we had to make sure the call was picked up WITHIN TWO MINUTES or pick up again and ask if the person wants to wait!
Yea those days are gone. I need a full charge on my phone before I even try to get past some of these horrible things. Usually am forced to suffer through some god awful hold music to boot.

At least with Apple, when you FINALLY make it past their automated crap, they have good help. Some companies outsourced to India. WORTHLESS!
Ey ow may I be elping you today? OH MY GOD!
Just for your amusement, an oldie but a goodie. And all too true.

This thread is going absolutely no good place so I'm closing this out. You've gotten your resolution for your iPod issues. The rest of your comments are bordering on belligerent to downright hostile and we don't need that here.
