What to replace my iPhone 7 with?
My inclination in the past has been to buy the next model up which in this case would be the iPhone 8. I am more than happy with a 4.7" screen, I really believe it is an ideal size. I had hoped for an Apple refurbished device but there don't seem to be any at least not here in Australia. There is also a surprising lack of second hand examples. Does this mean that they are so good people are hanging onto them or they were so bad there aren't any left?
The other option is to live in hope of the SE 2 (the so called iPhone 9) being actually released some time this year.
I suppose if I must I will go for the iPhone X or XR but 5.7" just seems unnecessarily large and heavy and the price is prohibitive at AU$1129 plus depending on storage whereas an iPhone 8 from Apple is AU$880 with 128Gb.
So assuming I want the smaller phone, don't care about the reduced photo options ( no portrait setting etc) what is my best and cheapest option at this time?

I will hang onto my 7 until it dies. Apple needs to realise we don't all have big hands or want to carry a near-tablet in a pocket.

Hey Rod. What's the driving force for a new phone?:

    - iPhone 7 won't do something you want it to do?
    - Having a problem with your iPhone 7...requiring replacement/upgrade?
    - Too much money...and need to reduce bank account balance ASAP?

If your iPhone 7 is working fine...you like the 4.7" size...and there are no refurbished iPhone 8's available...my vote is keep using the iPhone 7...or possibily look for a used iPhone 8 via eBay or other used electronics selling option.

I have that iPhone 7 I bought used almost a year back and it still works great. Speakerphone is loud and clean. I would have opted for the 7s due to the larger screen and my aging eyes but could not afford one at that time. The 7 does everything I want it to do and is very fast when doing non phone tasks.

    @Rod

I'm in line with the others - the iPhone 7 will last a good while longer.

Just a note re sizing: the physical size of the 8 is close to that of the X (5.45 x 2.65 v 5.65 x 2.79 inches). The screen of the X goes edge to edge though and it's this that makes the difference. And the screen resolution on the X is better; but I agree you're talking big money for the X v 8.

An 8 would be nice to have Rod, but the problem is trying to find one other than buying new. As for the SE2, all rumors seem to indicate that it will be around the same size as the 8 but will have more memory and a better camera. The demand for a smaller size phone is not as great as it once was so it's difficult to predict what Apple will do.

Ian gave you a good suggestion about maybe buying an X which is very close in size to the 8. I'm not sure what the difference in price is, but Apple is no longer selling the X from their store. The still do sell the 8 and the Xr.

Nick, I think your question goes to the heart of it. Why replace the 7 at all?
As others have said the 7 is a great little phone. It runs the current iOS and does everything I need it to do but I think that like the 5 and 6 will become redundant with future iOS upgrades.
My practice has always been to sell my old iPhone while it still worked well and still had value, upgrading to the model before the current model. I bought this 7 after the 8 was released. Apple skipping the 9 sort of through me out.
So given that this 7 canít last too much longer I rather upgrade to an 8 while I can still sell it.
At 5.45Ē the iPhone 8 is still not quite a small tablet and it still has a Home button which I prefer.
My concern is that Iím going to find myself in Indonesia or elsewhere in the world with a dead iPhone and limited options for replacement. In Indonesia an XR costs about AU $1500.00.

Totally understand Rod...if it's your normal practice to sell & upgrade when a new iPhone model was released.

I think one detail you mentioned that puts a wrinkle in things is that you said you really liked the 4.7" display size of the iPhone 7...and there wasn't a similar size available in the newest models...but was in an iPhone 8. And since a refurb iPhone 8 wasn't available via Apple Australia (I checked the US for refurbished iPhone 8's and didn't see any either)...if you were willing to purchase a used iPhone 8...that might be a solution.

In USA, humans trade in their iPhones (6s or higher) for the new shinny 11 something version.
My Iphone 5s is worth 3x more in Costa Rica than in the USA.

Probably not enough to offset the airfare though?

Loving my iPhone 7. The only feature that I might like to have in the newer iPhones is the facial recognition, but that's a very minor 'want'.

Heck, I just discovered the phone's slo-mo video feature a couple of days ago... (my 8-year-old loves the action shots of him in the snow). We use so little of the power that's in our pockets already.

The next thing I'm thinking of buying is something like a Moxie battery case for when this phone no longer has the juice to go all-day....
