    How full is too full?
Good day ladies and gents. I'm looking for some sage advice on how full is too full regarding my shiny new 128GB iPhone 6. I bought it with the intent of putting my entire music library, which is currently about 103GB, in it. I know that filling a device close to capacity is always a bad idea, but what would you consider that number of GB in this case? Of course I also need to consider leaving free space for photos, videos, apps, or even more music in the future. I'm just wondering if there is a magic number that I should consider my cutoff. Thanks in advance for any input!

The general consensus around here seems to be about 20% free space left on the drive, but that's already the case with just the music files. I'd think about culling that music herd by 20 gig or so. Photos take up a lot of space.

Hello - keep in mind that the iOS (and possibly other system files) will consume a portion of that stated storage; e.g. I just bought a 64 GB iPad Air 2, in settings, the total capacity listed is 55.9 GB, so you'll have to check your new iPhone since you are likely already @ 118 GB or so - there is little chance of you putting all of that music on the device along w/ your apps, pics, etc.

As to what is desired for 'free' storage, on Mac computers, the usually recommendation is to have at least 15% and better 20% available storage - I'm not sure, but could be less on these iOS devices - others will likely 'chime in' w/ their opinions. But that free space is needed just for the device to operate smoothly and to provide room for updates, especially if done OTA. Dave

Thanks Hempotmatic, I appreciate the advice. I figured I would have to cut it down a bit. I guess it's time to do that spring cleaning of my iTunes library that I've been avoiding for years!

Thanks for the info, RadDave! I did also find this article interesting: Exclusive Analysis: iOS app storage limits across range of devices | MacNN

In any case, I clearly need to tame my expectations a bit. Time to cut all my ex-girlfriend's music out, haha.

    LOL!

I've tried that, doesn't work. I always end up with "Oh cool, haven't heard THAT one in a while" and after spending a night into the wee hours, end up deleting MAYBE 1/2 dozen songs. I gave up.

Hi, I read your writing. Though you need a lots of space for keeping your all music. One thing you can do you can save your all songs into another drive whenever you need you'll take those from that drive.

I could be wrong here, BUT my last 2 iPhones were 16GB and only had about 3 or 4 GB free storage space. And I never had any trouble using them for whatever I needed.
Now, I would never attempt this with a desktop or notebook, but it doesn't seem to be (as much of) an issue with iOS devices.

That's just my personal observation. Maybe an anomaly? I don't know.

Well, advanced mathematics isn't my bailiwick , but 4 gig free on a 16gig drive looks like pretty close to 25% free space to me.

My iPhone 6+ is a 128GB. It say the capacity is 114GB. So that should give you approximately 91gb (20% left free) to 97gb (15% still free) of storage. The free space is needed for temp space for swapping, download of temp files like when you have to upgrade iOS, etc.

Remember. 20% does not always mean the same thing in all situations…it's just a general rule/guideline. 20% free on a device with a 1000gig of storage is not as "dire" as 20% free on a device with 128gig of storage.

    - 20% of 128gig = 25.6gig
    - 20% of 1000gig = 200gig

The 20% free suggestion is just a guideline to cover a WIDE range of devices…with a wide range of built-in storage.
