    Ipad 2 Problem
In 2011 I bought my hubby an iPad A1396. It is running IOS 9.3.5. It will not take any software updates.

It has started crashing quite often, sometimes 5 times in 15 minutes. Mostly this is with Safari. But it also happens when I attempt to take a video. Sometimes it will not turn completely off. I did read to reset it but it will not reset.

I think it is just done. It has had little to no usage over the years. I was hoping hubby would take an interest in learning to use a computer. But he said he just is happy without the world of computers, emails, texts and such. Today he suddenly wanted me to find something on the iPad. Of course it crashed. I promised him I would check the forum to see if someone could help me.

    Thanks.

Why doesn't it want to reset? I have an iPad 2 as well and it is very slow, but it is ultra stable for the one thing I used it for: streaming videos. Doing a full restore might be the best thing to get it back into shape or at least back to what it was when it was behaving.

While you aren't looking for it, the iPad Mini is around $399 or so and is SO much better than the iPad 2.

I don't know why it will not reset. It simply goes black and after a few minutes the apple shows on the screen and it comes back to life.
Thanks for the tip. I will investigate that.

I'm not positive, but I think you may have to turn off "Find My iPad" in order to reset it.

Thank you so much Patrick. While I am trying to remedy the situation he can use my 2008 MacBook that is collecting dust.

Going to attempt a reset. Thought I found it in General settings. It didn't say "reset to factory settings" just simply "reset."
I also went to diagnostics and the first crash was 7-18-13. "202152.panic.pist". The last says "TWC-iPad_2014-04-01-153124_iPad.plist". The info is probably useless I know.

In General--I go to the bottom of that page and it says "Reset". Then says "Reset all Settings". Erase All Content and Settings". and a few other choices.

Do I do the "reset" or
    "reset all Settings" or
    "erase all Content and Settings"

There is nothing that says "factory settings." Also, he does not have a computer to plus the iPad into so this is being done straight from the iPad.

I have turned off Find my iPad.

    Thank you.

By golly, I believe the reset went through!
I had to reset the wireless and sign into messages again.
It hasn't crashed in 30 minutes. So I would assume this means it worked.

I am so grateful to all of you who try to help those who are not as knowledgeable.
    Hubby thanks you also.

YuP!! That sure seems to be the case, at least according to most of these google search hits:

OP back on iPad 2 crashes. Took it to Genius Bar couple of days ago. He ran diagnostics on it and found nothing. He also reset it and it worked fine there. But, it was lying flat on the table. I have discovered today it only crashes when I pick it up. As long as it is not moved it is fine and will do anything. The second I pick it up it crashes. I looked into the diagnostic info and it had 3 kernel panics and 3 "resets" listed in the 15 minutes I had it on. I did take a photo if anyone is interested.

The Apple guy did say if the reset did not fix it that probably it was a hardware issue that could not be addressed. Is this true?

It's fine if it cannot be fixed. I'll give hubs my MacBook and get me a new one.

    Thanks to all of you.

It sounds from your description that there's just something loose or barely connected inside which could be a really ealy fix.

Well, could be a heck of a lot easier if they had designed it to be done easier!!!

Chect the ifixit site for your particular model foe take0apart instructions.

My suspicion is you'll just want to go and get a new one!!!

But hey, its battery may be close to the end of its useful life anyway.

Good excuse to buy yourself a new MacBook Pro. Go for it Nancy.

He did check the battery and said it was good. I'm good at fixing things so I'll go to that site and see what it says. I guess they don't want to waste their time on it. But it was nice that he spent an hour with me and didn't charge anything.

But, yes, it is very tempting to get a new MacBook.

Wait a minute. Let's see if I understand things. It's late in the day and I'm tired so forgive me if I review step by step:

    1. The iPad in question was purchased to get the husand interested in computer's (good move).
    2. Said iPad has now possibly gone down the drain so to speak.
    3. This is now a good excuse for the wife to get a new computer. On behalf of husbands everywhere that does not compute.

Any explanations appreciated since they are probably hilarious.

You could try switching off “Wake on raise” in Settings.

Sorry, It's an iPad 2. It probably doesn't have that option.

Settings -> Display & Brightness -> Tap the switch next to Raise to Wake to 'on' or off.

    Have you tried.
Reset or Restore. Resetting the iPad is a more thorough way of rebooting the device and may resolve the device's aberrant behavior. To do this, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and ignore the red slider that appears on screen. Keep the Sleep/Wake button pressed down until you see the Apple logo appear.
