    Battery issue?
iPad Air2 gets very got, and the battery drains really quickly. It went from 100% to 18% when not in use with no apps running. Used it for 5 minutes and it went from 100% to 88% in 5 minutes, with only 1 app in use. It does recharge, but it takes almost 3 hours. I'm thinking I need a new battery?

The iPad battery is huge and should take a while to charge up to 100%. In that vain, the battery should also last for a long time. My iPad 2 (yes the really old one) usually goes about couple of weeks from 100% charge with primary usage as Netflix streamer down to about 15% before I charge it up again. The charging usually takes overnight.

With the sort of battery drain you are talking about, you absolutely need a new battery.

Thank you. I do use that iPad a great deal, but I thought the battery would last more than 3 years. Ah well.

Grab the app CoconutBattery and run it with the iPad plugged in. It will tell you the health of the battery, cycles on it and what it's current capacity is. That should give you an idea of how well it is doing. If the cycle count is high or the capacity has gone down significantly, then the 100% now isn't what 100% was 3 years ago. The percentage doesn't change the battery's ability to hold a full charge (as defined at design time) diminishes over time.

This is a great idea! Got CoconutBattery 3.6.6, and it checked my MBA instantly but said I needed to give permission for iPad. There's nothing showing for me to give permission! I've unplugged, replugged, restarted, but although it "sees" the iPad, there's nothing anywhere where I can give permission. What am I doing wrong please?

By permission it's asking for the unlock code for your iPad Air 2. If you're running iOS 11 on your iPad Air 2 that's something new. I get the same thing on my iPad Pro and my iPhones.

Running iOS10; 11 will kill off 40 -count 'em 40!!! of my apps. There's no place for me to put any code - nothing shows up on my iPad at all - it just keeps beeping at me.

What kind of apps are you running that iOS 11 is going to kill 40 of them? And you never mentioned that your iPad Air 2 was beeping? And, what do you mean there is no place to put the code? How do you unlock your iPad Air 2 then?

iPad wasn't beeping until I plugged it into MBA and ran CoconutBattery then it beeped itself silly until I disconnected it.

The iPad was already unlocked when I ran CoconutBattery and it asks for permission to access iPad, and then says respond on iPad; similar to when you back up iPad to iTunes.

I've got lots of apps for education that the developers are not going to update for iOS11, and I use them all the time.

Unless they're 32 bit apps, they might work with iOS 11. However, that's up to you.

They must be 32 bit, because all the developers said it's too much work to update. So for now, I'm sticking with iOS10. I need to determine if I actually need a new battery, which I'm pretty sure I do.

Not sure how much Apple charges to replace the battery in an iPad. The usual cost is $79 for an iPhone. You may be able to do it yourself using the instructions at www.ifixit.com.

Update - took it to Apple today. The battery is fine. Ran diagnostics and end result is do a hard restore to factory settings to wipe everything out, and see if that solves it. If not I can get another iPad for $99. I find it hard to believe that Apple will sell me a new iPad for that amount, and I don't want a reconditioned/used one. I'm a bit peeved, because they admitted they don't know what's wrong, and now I have to transfer of my pix from iPad for a a routine that might not solve the problem. Considering that the nearest Apple store is almost 2 hours away, this is a royal nuisance!

My own experience with iOS devices is that sometimes the OS gets wonky or an app begins to draw heavily from the battery and you have a fast drain. I've been thru that now several times, once with a brand new 7+. Apple advised me to reset the phone using iTunes and then restore from backup. It worked with the 7+. No problems so far with my iPad Pro. I was never able to isolate which app was at fault though.

That's encouraging - thank you. Right now the iPad is completely frozen. Nothing opens, nothing moves, and I'm giving up until this evening when I have more time to wrestle with it. (Unless the Olympics have x-country skiing or skating on...)
