    iPhone hearing aids and CarPlay

    Hi all

I donít know if anyone can help but I have phonak hearing aids connected to my iPhone 8 and set to always use hearing aids but when I connect to CarPlay I donít get navigation directions to my aids it comes from car speakers even though I have whatever map app I am using set to play directions as Bluetooth phone call, so just to clarify when I get into car phone connects to CarPlay home screen and when I open a map on iPhone and start directions voice prompts come to my hearing aids as it should , as soon as I open the map on car screen no sound to hearing aids. if anyone has any suggestions on how I can force map apps or phone to keep using hearing aids would be much appreciated.

Not all autos use the same form of interaction with devices via CarPlay. Which auto (year and model) do you have? I know from experience when setting up CarPlay on our 2019 Honda CRV, it was rather complicated. The sales person at Honda set it up for us.

Have you tried contacting Phonak customer assistance to see if they could help? I visited their site but there was no mention of CarPlay interaction.

Phonak can’t help Apple same ,it just seems odd that everything setup to direct sound to hearing aids but no sound .

An after market device will likely complicate any CarPlay setup procedure. The best suggestion we have is to try to contact "Integrated Automotive" there in the UK to see if they can offer any advice on how to get your hearing aids working with their CarPlay Kit.

Several of our long time members are UK residents so perhaps they may know of someone there who can assist you with your Phonak hearing aids and the CarPlay kit.

The chap at Integreated automotive is looking into it I have sent him a link to my hearing aids manufacturer it just seems odd to me that I have set audio call routing to always use aids and map app set to play directions as Bluetooth phone call but nothing

You might find some help and support at the HEARINGTRACKER.COM site

I believe they are actually UK based but they also have a forum and with some pretty knowlegable members:
Hearing Aid Forum - Active Hearing Loss Community

I would take a guess that the problem may depend on your actual model of hearing aids and any "carplay" support.

    EDIT:
Assuming that your carplay radio is actually using Bluetooth, then I would assume it should work if and when paired if that is needed.
Phonak Marvel hearing aids support Bluetooth with direct connectivity according to their site:

    Thanks for all the reply’s
My aftermarket CarPlay uses Bluetooth to connect then drops Bluetooth and uses WiFi it just seems strange that in the house phone uses WiFi and Bluetooth without any problems but not in car.

I just came across this little bit and was wondering if you have to go to the control panel to make some changes, except you'd want to get it routed to your hearing aids:
Then I have to got to control center and select digital display- to get it routed to the radio.
CarPlay & Hearing aids audio routing - Apple Community

But does it really better if the navigation directions supposedly intended for your HAs comes from the car speakers as your HAs should pick up the sound so you can hear it, should they not???
ie: The whole purpose of hearing aids — get the sound to your ears properly.

PS: I just got my second pair of ReSound HAs that replaced my six-year-old pair due to a failing amplifier. Certainly they've made a few changes and improvements in the last 6 years.
And no, I did not bother with any of the add-on attachments or anything like that nor do I need an iPhone or iPad to control them that they apparently can work with. Besides that, the iDevices I have available to use are too old to use the software needed anyway.

    Hi pm-r
I don’t have to do anything as soon as I get in car a start it, CarPlay opens on home page, the reason I want voice prompts to my HA is because of road and other noise I need to have directions quite loud and it is to loud for my wife so if I can force either iPhone map app or CarPlay or all three to play through my HA’s it would be better.

Well Dell, did you contact "Integrated Automotive" there in the UK as Charlie suggested???

They should have a suggestion and solution for you.

If nothing else, crank up the volume on your Phonaks, or get your audiologist to program in an additional option program with the radio speaker volume up, but the road and other noise volume (background noise) turned way down.

I'm sorry I'm not much help and I know virtually nothing about car play Etc. But I really don't understand your statement and your #7 post:
My aftermarket CarPlay uses Bluetooth to connect then drops Bluetooth and uses WiFi
Why would the Bluetooth get dropped, and it was my understanding that is how carplay actually works is it not???

Or, can you not get your iPhone to talk directly to your Phonaks so you can hear the driving directions???

    PS:
Make sure you have no other devices connected to your phone (such as the car Bluetooth system). This may cause your hearing aids to disconnect.
Why did my Bluetooth disconnect and reconnect? | Phonak Marvel

Will my Phonak Marvel hearing aids pair to the Bluetooth in my car?
No. Most in-car Bluetooth systems pair with input devices, such as your phone. Phonak Marvel hearing aids are output devices.
Will my Audeo B-Direct Bluetooth hearing aids pair to the Bluetooth in my car?

Now I'm really confused, so I think I better just shutup!!!

Yes I have contacted the manufacturer and sent him a link to my phonak aids, according to the manufacturer of my CarPlay it is a lot more stable using WiFi than Bluetooth but it will use Bluetooth to make the initial connection but then when WiFi connects Bluetooth is not needed so it disconnects,(this is what the manufacturer told me) when using gps app on phone I get map on phone screen and directions to my aids so as CarPlay is just an extension of my phone it should be the same unless I turn on AUX I then get directions through car speakers.
Just to add if I make a phone call through CarPlay I get sound in my aids it’s only when I a using navigation app I don’t get sound to my aids.
