Help Me Understand Messages Alert Tones on iOS
I can't believe I can't figure this out after all these years.

In Settings > Notifications > Messages I have "Boing" set as the tone. When my daughter sends me a Message, I get the boing sound. This is what I want.

However, when my wife sends me a Message I get this tiny little "ting" sound that I can't hear at all. It might be the tone called "Note".

I do not have a custom Text Tone set up for my wife. It's just the Default, which is "Boing". (Another bit of confusion. Does setting a custom Text Tone mean that an incoming iMessage will also use that same tone?)

Where do I find that little "ting" (Note?) that I hear when my wife sends a message and how can I change it to something I can actually hear?

I think you'll find the instructions for what you're wanting to do here:
How to Change the iPhone Text Message Sound Effect

    And specifically under the heading:
How to Change the iPhone Text Message Sound Effect
    then >
How to Set Custom Text Message Sound Tones Per Contact

I hope that will fix things for you.

PS: I had to use Google to find the answer myself!!!

And you might want to check out the llnked assoviated artile as well:

Thank you, Patrick, but that doesn't help much. I already knew how to change the text message sound. As I said in my OP I have already set Boing as the default text tone. As I also said, I have not set a custom text tone for my wife. It is set to the default, which is Boing. (See the attached screenshot.)

What I don't understand is why I don't hear "Boing" when my wife sends a message, but instead hear a barely audible "ting" sound that I would never choose in a zillion years. (I don't have any hearing loss, but I do tend to suffer a sound attention deficit if I'm busy with something. I need something loud to bring me back to the real world.)

I don’t mean to awkward, but on my iPhone, the settings are completely different from yours. I assume we are talking iPhone and if so, what iOS have you got?

When I enter Settings, Notifications, Messages, I have totally different screen which talks about Lock Screen, Notification Centre, and Banners.

On the other hand, if I go Settings, Sounds and Haptics, I can set up my Ringtones and vibrations patterns.

I very much want to help, but I’m confused because I can’t reproduce your screenshot.

The screenshot I posted is of my wife's contact card in the Contacts app. It was there to show that I hadn't set up any custom text sound for my wife. Pick any contact. Scroll down past Ringtone to Text Tone. Tap on that and you'll get to the screen I posted.

As I said, the screen shot shows that: "It is set to the default, which is Boing."

For setting up default notifications sounds for messages you do indeed go to Settings>Notifications>Messages.

There I have Boing set as the default sound.

I still don't understand why I don't get a "Boing" when my wife sends me a Message.

    Well,
It seems my reply post won't work here today, nor when using Restore Auto-Saved Content. I have no idea why not!! Most annoying!!

Let me try with a suggestion again,

I guess you've gone over and checked ALL the possible settings according to sites such as these:
    YouTube
    YouTube

And I guess you've tried and done a shutdown and restart of your iPhone??

What about setting up an alert sound that you DON'T want to use, and test it, then set it to a sound you DO want to use and test it. Maybe that will reset the sound preference file and get it working properly.

I'm sorry I misunderstood your original problem, and I hope I've got it right this time.
