Pages - NOT free with new iPad mini??
    Can anyone help?

I've just bought a new iPad 2 Mini, and immediately updated the software to iOS 9.3.1.

I want to download and install PAGES for free, but I cannot - it's showing a charge of 7.99.

I was under the impression that this app was free with new iPads?

I've trawled a couple of forums and one suggestion was to log out of Apps (in settings) and back in again, and iWork suite would appear as free. But this hasn't changed anything.

    Grateful for any help! Thanks

I'm assuming the iPad deals in the UK are similar to the deals in the US. According to Apple's webpage the following apps come with any new iPad purchase:

"Every new iPad comes with Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iMovie, and GarageBand."

    http://www.apple.com/ipad-mini-4/apps/

If you're having issues…I would say get in touch with Apple to help.

    Nick,

Thanks for the reply. I think the link in your email may be the clue as to why I'm having this issue. It's actually an iPad Mini 2 (not 4) I bought. It was bought brand new from Amazon UK.

So I don't know if this applies only from the Mini 4 or not. In any case, I'll contact Apple, as you suggest.

    Thanks again for your reply.

You may be right. The iPad Mini 2 is an older model…and they're probably priced at "kick 'em out the door" prices! Thus no free apps.

I'm sure a quick call to Apple will get things sorted. If you "butter-up" the Apple person you speak with…maybe they'll give you Pages for free (Apple sometimes does generous stuff like this)!

    Good luck,

Just some info about the free iWork apps: Apple has been offering the iWork apps for free since 2013 along with a purchase of any Mac. However, that may have been a US and Canada offer only and possibly not including the UK or Australia. When I purchased my iMac in 2013 and went on line to the app store, it automatically downloaded the iWork suite. And I also received the iOS versions of the iWork suite for free when I accessed the iOS app store with my older iPhone 5c. (again in 2013)

    Go here: http://www.apple.com/shop/buy-ipad/ipad-mini-2

Look at the "Free apps from Apple" section and you'll see that those apps are included. Here's the footnote that goes with it:

iMovie, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are free on the App Store for qualifying iOS 9 compatible devices with initial activation on or after September 1, 2013. GarageBand is free on the App Store for qualifying iOS 9 compatible devices with initial activation on or after September 1, 2014. See www.apple.com/ios/whats-new for iOS 9 compatible devices. Downloading apps requires an Apple ID.

Are you sure Pages isn't there? I have the same iPad mini (2), bought last summer, and the app is on mine. The icon looks different from on OSX - it's an all-orange square.

Thanks to all for replying. OK, here's where we're at:

I contacted Apple Support. I chatted through exactly what I had sight of in the Apps Store. Well, on my iPad Mini 2, there is NO 'Apps made by Apple' option.

Just to confirm, I am fully up to date, ie 9.3.1. I made Apple aware of this and they couldn't understand why my Apps Store seems different to everyone else's. They sent me a link showing how to download Pages and the rest for free. But the link just reiterates the same advice I've heard on this forum.

So, Pages, Numbers and keynote are found after a search, but they're priced at 7.99 each. There seems no way round this for me. So, the bottom line is: I've just shelled out good money for a brand-new iPad Mini, but can't get the free apps. And even Apple Support can't help.

It looks like I'm heading over to the enemy, folks. MS Word is there, ready, for free. So I'll be going for it.

Make a Genius Bar appointment in your nearest store (Edinburgh?) and get them to sort it. Or Apple Support may be able to access your iPad remotely and do it.

The iOS Microsoft Word app is free and was just recently updated. You will also need to download and install the free OneDrive app for both your iPad and Mac so you can copy Word documents from your Mac to the iPad Mini. Works real well between my Mac and iPhone.

Badshoehabit - Apple Support did offer to book me in for an appointment at the nearest store (yes, Edinburgh) but by then I was beginning to think, 'Is this really worth the hassle?'

Chscag - happy to download OneDrive also. Just hoping that these two apps aren't too large to install - I'm standing at just 10GB left on this supposedly 16GB iPad (without having stored or installed anything at all since purchase). Capacity reads 11.9GB, not 16GB - but that's another issue).

In any case, I've had a look at some reviews of this Pages app, and it does come in for some criticism. I have Pages '09 on the iMac, and it's excellent. By many accounts this new Pages is a watered-down, inferior version. So maybe I'm not really missing out on much after all?

    A) The Microsoft apps are free, but they are only good for viewing unless you have an O365 or OneDrive account (which cost money).

    B) All apps are awesome. And they all suck. Search the Internet and you will find both sides in massive quantities. Reviews are hard to make good use of because people seldom include details as to WHY it's superior or inferior to something else.

    C) Did you ask Apple if you could buy the apps and then have the purchase price credited back to you? That seems the absolute simplest fix unless there's a problem with your iTunes account or the iPad itself (neither of which seems -terribly- likely at this point).

Nothing wrong with using Microsoft apps on Apple products lots & lots of Apple users do it.

Not sure where you're getting this from? A OneDrive account is still free although MS has just recently stated that it will be for 5 GB only not the former 15 GB. And... even before I had my OneDrive account I could edit and create Word documents with the free iOS version of Word. (The editing feature is limited but available.)

I'm going on memory, and my recollection was from a couple of years back when the apps were first introduced. You could view and I believe print, you could possibly even edit. But, you could ONLY save to OneDrive (which I think is still the case). Honestly, the original release had what seemed to be "so many restrictions" that I just didn't bother.
