    Hey Rod:

I remember how disappointed you were when you could no longer use the old Mac-Forums app because it was 32 Bit. Glad to hear you're enjoying the new app!

Thanks for that mention. I hadn't heard of this paticular app and it looks interesting.

I have a ouple of projects in the works that I would like to provide transcripts for folks who have hearing impairments. This might be a convenient way to create the transcripts in near real time. Do you think it would work for that?

Talking Thai <> English Dictionary - I use it many times per day to look up Thai words I don’t know and English words I don’t know how to say in Thai. The app is very customizable, clearly pronounces words for you at both normal and slow speed and has a great "explainer" resource for things like pronunciation, spelling and usage.

    Favourite apps:

Almost any weather app you care to mention including the really expensive ones.

Ian, I hear it said that it doesn't matter how many weather applications, instruments etc. one has, and regardless of price, one just takes a guesstimate as to just how misty cold and miserable the weather going to be in Wales with the occasional chance of some beautiful sunshine, but with a rainbow showing in the background.

    @Patrick

It's not so bad as that. It's that there are micro-climates within a 15 mile radius of where one lives. Wales, in general, has a varied weather pattern; but "North Wales" is a largish area with huge variations in weather on a daily basis.

The major weather apps lump us altogether - apps that are well thought of elsewhere, eg, Weather pro, Met Office, Weather Live, Rain Today, Dark Sky, Apple's Weather, Weather:Weather forecast - vie with each for individuality.

They all seek to be different.

Anyway, having lived in Manchester, UK, for 29 years, there is no where wetter, summer or winter. So, we are blessed, where we live now.

I think it also works in your area, but maybe give this one a try:
Weather Forecast & Reports - Long Range & Local | Weather Underground

It also has a very good and accurate radar weather map for our area and a lot of local bikers and runners rely on it. But at least it works well here.

And there's the rub. Hard to make a recommendation because you have to try them all to find out which ones work where you are or plan to be. I used to use Weather Underground all the time. But, they started charging for even limited use of their API, so many people with personal weather stations stopped sending them data. In my area there used to be half a dozen PWSs, and now there is only one that is about 40K from my house. So, for my location WU has become worthless. (I'm afraid this is all IBM's doing.)

I also used WU to badge my webcam images with current weather data. But, when they started charging for use of their API, I switched to Open Weather Map. Their API returns a file (JSON) that is full of data and easy to parse. AFAIK, they don't have an iOS app.

Now I'm considering switching to Dark Sky. I like their iOS app and find both their current weather data and predictions to be quite accurate. Plus they send out UV alerts to which this old white guy needs to pay attention.

Another site with a very nice iOS app and accurate data is MeteoBlue.

It's been many years but I remember the weather at Korat was always a lot nicer than it was in Bangkok. I spent a 3 month tour of duty at the Don Muang Royal Thai air base which used the same runways as Bangkok International Airport. The weather there was not only hot and humid but the air was obscured by local smog generated from autos, buses, and factories. I remember driving the 40 KM into Bangkok and getting lost in city traffic and those confounded traffic circles.

Does Bangkok still have smog and hazy days?

It's worse than ever. The concentration of PM 2.5 is unhealthy most days.

Bangkok Air Pollution: Real-time Air Quality Index

People buy and wear special N95 masks to filter the dust. As we drove through yesterday it was pretty awful. Visibility was maybe 10K.

Korat is, indeed, nicer; but still way too hot for comfort in the "summer".
