Edit photos on iPad but not in camera roll
Recently took photos (raw) with Nikon cam at wedding For friends. I usually use photoshop and bridge for all my photos on my Mac book pro. Will be on long flight and thought I would edit photos on iPad during flight to fill the time. First I copied them all to apple iCloud as files. Canít seem to access them from iCloud with photo editing apps ( ps, Lightroom, Snapseed, etc.) on iPad. Trying to avoid putting them into iPhoto or what ever they have named it these days. Am I foolish? Out of luck trying to do it this way? Still have time to figure this out before my flight. Donít want to carry my MacBook Pro with recent issues re batteries and flying and weight.

Thanks for any suggestions, even just give in and put the photos into iPhoto.

    Diane

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

    Hi Diane V

My understanding is that whilst you can upload RAW files to iCloud, you can't access or download them to third party apps such as Lightroom, Snapseed etc.

This is particularly so on iDevices. But you can download and Edit on Macs and iDevices to iPhoto or its successor, Photos app.

Photos app replaced iPhoto app some years ago and is much superior in terms of editing.

I know you would rather not hear this; as you said.

OK, I'm lost, so how are these RAW images going to get edited as it seems you don't want to take your MacBook Pro with you on the flight???

Besides that, why are you so adverse two using the photo application that Apple provided free of charge and can do all that you want???

Also, why are you bothering to try accessing them from your iCloud account???

BTW: If you are flying from your Vancouver area and not returning from a US Airport, the FAA battery rulings may not even affect you. Check with the airline that you will be using before you fly.

Thanks all. Iíve admitted defeat and jumped into the closed garden with both feet. Now success. On my Mac I dragged all the photos in question to the Photos app. Then they populated to all my devices including iPhone and iPad. Now I can edit each photo on my iPad with my Ps and other apps and when Iím finished editing I can save the edited version back to Photos. Thatís all I need for the plane trip. And they are safe in photo stream /cloud, backup wise.

Mt flights include several stops in the US and Bahamas ( yes I know) before Iím back in Canada and itís hard enough without added weight along with photography gear and possible battery issues with my Mac book so I plan to leave it home.

And why donít I just edit with the photos app? Old lady, hard to learn new apps when. I can use PS (since ver 3) more or less without thinking. I played with Photos but it was just too different, so frustrating and not fun.

I did convert from WordPerfect to Word and now Pages, so I do get some points, yes?

Thanks again for your help and suggestions.
    Diane

Well done, Lady One step at a time.

The Photos app does most of the work for you in the sense that it organises yours pictures into Events, Memories and so on - you don't need to do anything at this stage.

The Editing Suite is NOT PS, but not that far behind and if you feel the need of additional editing function, you can add an excellent app called Affinity Photo which is inexpensive and can be added to the Photos app as an extension.

This provided non-destructible editing. It takes the picture outside of Photos app, does what you want it to, then returns it to Photos app. All changes can be undone.

Need any help setting up or using the Photos app, just ask.

Be aware that while you are on the airplane you may not be able to edit shots that are in iCloud Photos unless you have Internet access as Photos may have "optimized" them meaning only a non-editable low resolution version is available.

I gave up on iCloud Photos after I’d been on a dive trip. On the way home in the airplane I wanted to edit some of them, but each and every photo I’d taken had been optimized and was unavailable for editing without an Internet connection. This in spite of the fact that my iPhone had 32GB of free storage.

Caveat: I know that some people have had different experiences with iCloud Photos and I’m not sure if this applies to RAW photos.

Thanks for the warning. Iíll check it out. Iíll be travelling part of the time with young tech guys. They often have a mobile hotspot device so they can play games and file news reports. Donít ask me how it works but Iíve used it before in the air and in remote locations. I think Iíll be fine or just sleep on some of the flights and edit in hotels and airports. I just got a wireless sd card and will be playing with that too for current shots. No pressure.

Just turn off "optimization" and the Photos won't be moved to iCloud. On the iDevice, go to Settings, then Photos and select "Download and keep originals."

EDIT: Just to be clear, with that setting images will still sync, but the copy on the iDevice won't be deleted to make space and you won't need to have Internet to work with all of your images.
