RAW file format support

At the turn of the year I bought myself 2 new cameras:

- a Fujifilm GFX50R
- a Fujifilm X-T3

Opening raw files from either of these cameras in Preview isn't possible.

Given that they have been out for a while now (December 2018 for the GFX and earlier still for the X-T3) I was wondering if anyone would know how often Apple get round to providing support for these files? I'm running 10.14.4 so am bang up to date.

It's not a huge problem, as Adobe Lightroom does support the files, but sometimes I want to use Preview to, well, preview the images without opening LR.

macOS supports those cameras, Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 12 and macOS Mojave - Apple Support.

If you select the image you want to “preview”, and press the spacebar, does the image appear? Not the file opening, but just appearing on screen?

The article I'm about to Link, partly addresses this difficulty. It's a terrific review on all aspects of dealing with RAW alone, JPEG alone or RAW + JPEG pairs.

Granted the final destination and purpose of the article is to get RAW or JPEG or RAW-JPEG pairs into Photos app; but in using his workaround which involves putting them first in a Folder in Finder, you can, it seems, preview them there before import.

OK, it might not help, Nick; but worth a try and certainly worth a read. Best I can do, sorry.

ferrarr - yes, pressing the space bar previewed the image. For some strange reason after trying the space bar option, I am now able to fully open the files in Preview!

I have no idea why that should be the case, as previously I just got the message that the file format was not supported.

Oh well, it's working now!

Did you restart your Mac, prior to trying the spacebar? I also have no idea what could have changed to make it work now.

it did the same on my MBP too. Almost like the space bar woke up some ability to open the files!!

I’m wondering if they need to be indexed, before they can be viewed by Finder? Have you restarted your Mac?

Will they open from the card, you are importing from?

No re-starts.

I noticed when I could open them that there were tiny thumbnails next to the filename and not the blank "files" that are there now.

I can't open them directly from the card either - the screen shot above is from my SD card, but I get the same message when trying to open from my external SSD (their import destination) as well.

I know you got it working by other means, but if you read the article in detail, he goes about it in a different manner and also organises Finder in a different way.

You may not be wanting to put your photographs in the Photos app - that's okay - it's the method he suggests for displaying them which I think might help.

mac OS journaled I think - whatever the standard mac format is

I'm thinking it's got to be the file format, though that wouldn't explain why they were previewable before and not now

I think I may have hit on the problem.

I originally shot the images on these cameras in Uncompressed Raw format. However at some stage pretty soon after I got the cameras I switched to "lossless compressed", and I think it's from this point that Preview is unable to open the files.

I'm in bed unwell at the moment, but when I'm able to I'll shoot some images with each format and see if that's causing the issue.

yep, that's the problem. Preview will open the uncompressed files but NOT the compressed ones!!

sorry for wasting everyone's time on this when it was my fault and not my macs's from the beginning :-(
