I don't know about the other browsers, but Chrome allows you to look inside and change some of the settings. The other problem seems to be the mac-forums not responding to some cookie etc. settings, and/or not updating some for some reason.

I finally got things working by going back to my original password that used to work, and changing some of the Chrome cookie settings as much as I could. Some seem to be encrypted so I left them alone.

I also tried using a little utility called Cookie.app which may have contributed to part of the solution, but I'm not a hundred percent sure. Regardless it has some very good user comments and reviews, especially for keeping one's browsing safe.
I ended up using their old 4.6 version to be compatible with Mavericks 10.9.

For a start, try deleting your FF bookmark and create a new one.

Thanks Patrick, but that is a waste of time.

I now have the same problem with auto login from the bookmark than when logging in from a notification email.
The auto login "sticks" for a while. but then, after some indeterminate time, auto login doesn't work and I have to log in manually.

However, your other posts gave me an idea.
On firefox, and other browsers as well I assume, there is an option to determine how cookies from specific websites are to be handled.
That option in my case was essentially the default with no special treatment specified for any website or any cookies.
The options are "block" "allow for session" and "allow"
So I added one website now, this forum with the option "allow" - maybe that makes a difference.

Still, let's not forget that things worked fine for me for months until the forced password change - that's when this problem started.
    Could be coincidence..........

Could be but I'm doubting it as that's exactly when the sh*t hit the fan and screwed up all my browsers' auto login from working properly.

I just now just seem to possibly have fixed my FF as well now and I had to to some deleting and then re-enter any data for mac-forums, and it's now working, but I also did a quit of FF and restart after each change.

Use the directions here and especially under the "Clear history for that site" topic in the FF Preferences:
Fix login issues on websites that require a username and password | Firefox Help

If anything shows up in the FF login box when you first enter your username or password to access the mac-forums site, you haven't cleared enough associated stuff.

When it's all virgin after starting FF, then also hit the :Remember Me" box,

So far it's stuck for me after several FF restarts.

Good luck and have patience. It's needed!!!

Now it's time for an evening red wine and a break.

EDIT: BTW, I had also changed my password back to my original one at the mac-forums site user settings which I sure helped fix things.

It's odd that it seems to work for so many others when they change their passwords. Maybe our problem is due to some border problem.

I think you got the spelling of that word wrong.... I would say it's due to some "broader" problem.

Turns out that change didn't make any difference.
I'm going to take that out again.

OK - I have just done that.
Then logged in again with my current password, the one I changed on 21 June 2019 - let's see what happens.

If that doesn't work I will change the password back to the very first one I had on this site (which luckily I still have) and see if that helps.

It's really strange that this problem, at least for me, is unique to this forum.
at every other forum I visit, the auto login works just fine every time.

Don't forget to quit and restart your browser after making such drastic changes.

At least it seemed to help with my situation.

Don't forget you were not alone, I had exactly the same problem, and three out of three browsers were affected.

Two out of three have been repaired and now working, but it doesn't look like my Safari will ever recover but it was so goofed up anyway it doesn't matter as I basically gave up using it months ago and it's not worth my time fiddling about with it either.

Here's hoping it sticks and stays working.

Well done and patience and persistance helps and often leads to success.

    Get that backup update completed!!!

Sorry, for some reason my reply post won't work nor the "Restore Auto-Saved Content" for some unexplained reason so I'll try this.

Everything is still good this morning using Firefox.
A definite "fix"...although it's not really clear what the problem was exactly - some corruption in a FF history file I suppose.

    Good to hear Knute.

Just to be clear and without me having to re-read all the messages, did you end up going back to your old original password for the mac-forums site to get it working properly?
