Probably Safari. I tested Ad Blockers with Safari and while the "gray ghosts" disappear it leaves a large white blank space the same as Bob is experiencing. However, when I use Chrome, everything is normal so it's very likely a glitch with Safari that's causing the white space to appear.
Nothing wrong with the forum software as far as I can determine.

Like I said, the problem is with Safari, not the forum software. Everything appears normal when using Chrome.

Different browsers definitely handle things differently. Whether it's website content on any website...or the ads displayed on each website. Another angle is...some of the ads from different ad providers are getting smarter...and are finding ways to foil ad-blocking software. Then the ad-blocking software folks upgrade their apps to foil the new/smarter ads. So it's sort of a back & forth tug of war between ad providers & and the ad-blocker app folks.
If you don't like seeing large white spaces...or the gray boxes...turn off your ad-blockers...then you'll see everything as it's meant to be seen (as if not using an ad-blocker). Or check for updates for your favorite ad-blocker to see if things are different with an up to date ad-blocker.

04-19-2019, 08:32 PM #22Just testing with new adblocker, please ignore.
I think it's blocking my posts as well!!! Not the best.
Adblocker Genesis Plus disabled.
Thanks,
- Patrick

EDIT:
Now trying with Adblocker Genesis Plus enabled.
Ignore if you like.
EDIT #2:
Using Adblocker Genesis Plus with Mavericks 10.9.5 and Google Chrome v. 67.x
Genesis Plus adblocker removes all ads and popups from all websites! The fastest adblock available plus modern controls and features...
Significantly improves your browsing performance and memory usage with no disruptions whatsoever. This extension uses about half as much memory as other popular solutions: Adblock, Adblock plus (ABP), and even the original uBlock.
Small white space at the top and no sign of any ads, or grey graphics. And FAST!!!
Here's hoping it works in other websites.

About time Sue. Glad to hear that.
I used to be conceited but now I'm perfect.
04-20-2019, 12:52 PM #24Well, as I mentioned above, Adblocker Genesis Plus (chrome extension) is the best for for me (with Mavericks 10.9.5) for blocking all the gray graphics Ads as I posted previously, but even with it disabled and with no ad blocker enabled or running at all, I cannot help the ad revenue for the mac-forums unfortunately, as none of the ads even show properly and are nothing more than a row of gray Graphic boxes. (See my post #1)
If they showed or displayed properly, I might consider WhiteListing the site and I'm not going to change the browser I'm using thanks.
So until it gets fixed, I shall continue using Adblocker Genesis Plus. Sorry.
BTW: All the ads seem to be for the US https://www.amazon.com anyway that I won't normally use due to various extra charges, rather than the Canada https://www.amazon.ca site.
BTW:
Sorry Charlie, but that doesn't seem to be correct, at least not in my case or situation.

I just tried white listing the site on my mini, running Safari 12.1 in Mojave 14.4, but every time I clicked on "Top" or "New Posts", a new tab would open, so I removed the white list from AdBlock and Ghostery Lite.

If anyone else ends up with this "problem", I'm pretty sure I discovered the cause — using the Malwarebytes Browser Extension, at least with Google Chrome!!
With any ad blocked disabled or site whitelisted, the grey graphics show [see screenshot post #1] if Malwarebytes Browser Extension extension is installed and enabled.
Just thought I'd mention the cause for my broswing situation in case it happens in someone else's case, and the solution is to disable or remove Malwarebytes Browser Extension from chrome. Other browsers may be affected the same way but I didn't bother testing.
