Mac Forums Won't Load in Safari
    MacOS 10.14.4
    Safari 12.1
    2017 iMac

I've just been away from home for a week.

Now, back home, I discover that I can't get Mac Forums to load in Safari.

Whatever page I try, it partially loads and then I get the dreaded SPOD and have to quit or force quit Safari to recover.

I've tried restarting the machine, but that didn't work.

This grab from top is the main clue that something has gone wrong:

    PID COMMAND %CPU TIME #TH #WQ
    23050 com.apple.We 99.2 02:57.61 4/1 1

Along with this screen grab from Activity Monitor.

    Screenshot 2019-04-14 17.29.53.jpg

The forum works fine in Chrome from which I'm posting this.

    Any ideas?

Are you still getting this error? I'm logged in with Safari now with no problems. My Safari version is 12.1.1 bacause I'm running the current Mojave beta.

Yep. Same problem. I clicked on the link in the email on this thread. Safari appeared to open the page, but as soon as I moved the cursor over Safari, the SPOD appeared and Safari locked up.

This reply is being written from Chrome.

I have no problem with other websites in Safari.

I just followed the email link back to this thread and had no problems. In fact it loaded a bit faster this time. The first time I had just logged into my Mac and several apps were loading.

Just out of curiousity are you running an ad blocker in Safari? If not can you tell whT AD MIGHT HAVE BEEN TRYING TO LOAD.

Do you have another user account you can test from? Or maybe create a new one for testing purposes? Another option, would be to clear Safari history.

Good suggestion Bob. I should have thought of that. It's one of my go go moves when troubleshooting issues like this.

I don't have any content blockers active in Safari. Based on what I see in Chrome, the ad that fails to load is from Amazon. If I try to reload the page I get this message from Safari:

"The webpage is not responding, so loading cannot be stopped. Do you want to force reload this page?"

I do not have another user set up on this machine.

Time for bed here in Thailand so I'll get back to this in the morning.

    Two questions:

    1. When was the last time you were able to successfully load Mac-Forums in Safari...and was this at home or away from home?
    2. When was the last time you were able to successfully load Mac-Forums in Safari from home?

I realize the answer to this question might be the same...but since you mentioned traveling...this throws a wrinkle into things.

    Thanks,

    Just a quick note here....

Safari has been acting up with some other sites that I sometimes visit. So far, it's okay with our site but I have noticed glitches with other sites that I normally do not frequent. Switching to Chrome always resolves the glitches. We may be dealing with something that we have no control over.

When I was away from home I just used Safari on an iPad and had no problems. I was last home on April 7th. I had no problems then.

I tried clearing the Safari cache, but that didn't help.

It's odd because it seems to load at first, but then the web page begins to disappear in places. See the screenshot:

Bob, I'm not having this issue with Safari at the moment but have seen it some time in the last year or so. When it happened it affected whatever site/page was being loaded. I finally tracked it down to something elese that was running in the background and bringing things to a halt for several second at a time. I finally had to load Activity Monitor before starting Safari to see what process was hanging things up. Unfortunately I don't remember the culprit. Maybe that will help you pin things down a bit.

@Ratsima That was a suggestion for you to try not Bob.

If you’re not using a content blocker, you should download AdBlock and Ghostery, from the macOS App Store.

What content would I want to block?

Doesn't it seem odd, though, that some rogue process would affect exactly one website on only one browser?

In my case it wasn't just affecting one site. This might not be what is causing your issue but it might be worth a try.

Clearing the Safari cache for Mac-Forums is what I was going to suggest.
