It was a nice day here in South Wales yesterday (look up rare earth event) and we had the back of the house opened up to enjoy it. Suddenly this Sparrowhawk flew in!

It managed to fly back out after thrashing around for a few minutes. I was worried it was hurt but he seemed OK once he extricated himself.

Wow ... a rare event indeed.
Great pictures.
It looks like a very young bird, probably hatched earlier this year.

Cheers ... McBie

Hi Nicky - love the pics - I'm a raptor fan! Googling some pics of 'hawks' in your area - might be a young Sparrowhawk (as shown below), but if you have more specific details please share - hope that the bird flew out w/o harm?

Just north of Charlotte, NC (and about an hour's drive for us) is the Carolina Raptor Center (http://www.carolinaraptorcenter.org), where there are many different birds of prey, most have been injured and rehabilitated so cannot be release back into nature - a fun visit for us about once a year or so. I'm seen a few Red Shouldered Hawks land in the trees in our yard and a bunch of raptors overhead - Dave :)
