View Full Version : time machine drive question

I am still learning the basics of my mbp. I bought a 1TB My Passport for my mbp, set it up on time machine and I have it connected via usb when I am at home. I use the laptop at home and at work.

Do I understand that time machine will save some of the images on my hard drive when the external is not connected? If so, is there a way to change the settings so that it will only save to the external when I have it plugged in and not on my hard drive? I usually plug it at home when I set it up so it is routinely plugged in. Or is there an advantage to letting the system save on my hd when it is not plugged in?

Read the following article and follow directions to turn off Time Machine from making local backups when your external drive is disconnected.

Here's additional info LINK (http://pondini.org/TM/30.html).
Enabling local snapshots has more advantage than turning it OFF.

Thank you both for a quick reply. This is exactly what I was looking for. I had read in a post from somewhere about someone needing to stop the time machine from saving to their hard drive. Knowing how to do it is helpful - thanks for the link, but also knowing that with my setup I do not need to shut it off because it will only keep a weeks worth of data.

I must say that this forum has a lot of helpful people.
