Copy Contacts To Another Mac Laptop
This is not exactly a hardware question, but how do I get a copy of my Contacts from one laptop to another?

I want to have my Contacts on my other computer in case of a catastrophic breakdown on this one.

    Thanks.

Open the Contacts app on the computer that you wish to copy the contacts from and click on "File", "Export". You can export the contacts to either a PDF file or as a vCard format. Then on the computer you wish to copy them to, open the Contacts app and select "File" "Import". That will work.

Having said the above, the elegant way to do it is to sync your Contacts using iCloud. That will copy your contacts to your iPhone, iPad, another Mac, and so on. The reason why I mentioned the first method is I seem to remember that you don't like using iCloud.

    ^^You have a good memory.

I now have a file called "Contacts - 04-03-2020.abbu" on my Desktop. Looks good.

    1) Is there a way for me to move it physically to the other computer? Like on a thumb drive?

    2) Is there a way to install it on the other computer without "Replacing All" and losing the contacts that are already on the other computer?

Yes, you can use a thumb drive to move the file to the other computer.

Contacts, has an option to import, and as far as I remember it just adds the names, to what is already there? Have you tried it? Maybe you should export the other computer contact list before importing the new contacts?

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

I downloaded the .abbu file onto the other computer, but when I open it, all the content of the file was from the second computer's Contacts, not the first.

Try this and it should fix things. I accidentally posted it in the wrong thread. I should have posted this fix when I read the thread the first time. It's a common mistake.

    1. Go back to the computer that has the contacts you want to export.
    2. When you export the contacts export them as a vCard file not as an archive.
    3. Save the file to a flash drive or email it to the other computer.
    4. Import the vCard file.

    Hey Sly...

If you look at my first reply to Marrk, you'll see that I recommended he export to either PDF or vCard. He can import from either.

You're right. I missed that completely. IIRC the abba file he's talking about is the format used as a backup. It seems like that would be the right format but it's not.

The good thing about using vCard format is that it's supported by lots of programs.

Just to add a tiny detail.

If the recipient Mac has got some Contacts there already, you obviously would prefer not to have duplicates added from the donor Mac.

When you File > Import, it should give you the option to "Add" or "Merge". "Add" speaks for itself. "Merge" avoids duplicates. This seems only to work with vCards.vcf
