Its a good point you make Randy. I'm running a 2015 13" MBPr with Catalina and considering all of the predicted changes forecast for Apple devices in the coming year eg. new screen sizes, keyboard actions, processors and models I'm just hoping my device lasts till I can consider a new 16" with scissor action keyboard and an ARM processor.

Some concerns I have with the current MBA:

    1. Battery is in poor condition
    2. RAM is only at 4GB
    3. Computer runs very hot sometimes
    4. Power adapter is frayed

I did a complete wipe of the SSD last year after the fan wouldn't turn off. The computer was a little snappier after that but still lags a lot on simple tasks, like opening Word documents. The limited RAM is no doubt part of it.

By the time I'd replace or upgrade everything wrong on it, I'd be well on my way to getting a new computer. I'll probably keep this old Air around as a backup, albeit without Word and Excel since I'm going to move them to the new machine.

I've had the batteries replaced in old MB's by third party repair places here in California, and the price (at least compared to having Apple do it) was very reasonable.

All of my old MBA's only have 4GB of RAM and they run Microsoft Office and they have no performance problems whatsoever. A tip...despite what most well-meaning folks will tell you, the newer the Mac OS you run, the less your MBA will need more RAM. Newer versions of the Mac OS have more and more sophisticated memory management and memory compression.

All MB's run very hot sometimes. It's normal.

OEM power adapters are ridiculously priced. Non-OEM power adapters are inexpensive, but to be avoided. (They tend to ether be unreliable or downright dangerous.) But you can find used OEM power adapters in really good shape at excellent prices.

So...I've decided what I'm going to do here...

I'm going to buy the new MacBook after all. I'm also going to keep the old one around to use with clients when they need web access, wiping it from everything so that it's acceptable on the web.

I hope that you are aware that the new MacBook Air only has 2 USB C and a headphone input. You can a USB C to 4 USB inputs on eBay for less than 5, Apple will charge nearly 4 times that price. Will leave it to others with more experience than me to answer your other questions.
