Question MacBook pro 2009 turns on then not
I recently acquired a MacBook pro 17" Mid 2009. I got it fairly cheap for parts. After check it out. I found out that it didn't turn on.

I tried everything untill I got it to turn on by removing the battery and plugging it back in and pressing the power button.

After it turned on I installed mac os x El Capitan on it.
    With no problems or shutdowns.

After I turned it off. I tried to turn it on the next day and it did nothing when pressing the power button.

So I took the cover off again and plugged and unplugged the battery many times again untill it turned on again.

Even after leaving it for about 4 hours it doesn't turn on. I have to keep messing with it to turn on

    What could cause this issue?

    Welcome to our forums.

    What could cause this issue?
    Bad battery?

    Bad power supply?

    Logic board?

That's probably why you got it cheap.

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

If it's a parts computer...why the concern about 100% operation? As soon as it's disasembled for parts...it ain't gonna work either.

    Or sure close anyway...

But regardless, I'm wondering why their concern and as Nick has already mentioned, it was purchased as a parts machine.

It would also be great to know how the computer the OP purchased was advertised.

    - If it was advertised as 100% working.
    - Or if it was advertised as a "parts computer" only...with no guarantee's that it worked.

For example if it was a water-damaged computer (that the seller may or may not have mentioned)...then all bets are off as to its working...not working...or kinda working..

SMC has to do with pressing power button for 10 seconds while disconnected, or at least it used to?

When and How to Reset Mac SMC (System Management Controller)

I thought this was a hardware help forum.

It was advertised as for parts only. From the seller. I fix laptops mostly windows PC's I'm new to MacBooks. I have a MacBook 15" with a cracked screen. So I figured I bought this other MacBook to use the screen but when I bought it I didn't know it was actually a 17" MacBook. I had no problem with it. I checked for liquid damage and everything is clean inside. So I figured it could be a simple fix. That is the reason why I tried to fix it instead of parting it out. I did manage to find out the issue

It turned out to be a bad resistor P7771. Which I believe is a common problem with these machines.

Thanks for the update. And congrats on getting what was purchased as a parts computer into what sounds like a fully operational computer.
