2013 Macbook Air Keyboard and Touchpad issue
    Hi,

I have a 2013 Macbook Air 13" with some weird issues. The Keyboard and Touchpad don't want to work while in the OS. However, the Keyboard and Trackpad will work in the recovery option.(holding down Option at boot). I know both work but they won't work in the OS. I have tried scanning for viruses (None), running first aid, checking startup programs, turning on Bluetooth, and some other things.

What do you guys recommend? I want to steer away from reinstalling the OS as much as possible. Last result kind of thing.

    Any advice helps! Thanks!

What version of OS X are you running on there? When did this start? Have you tried booting into Safe mode (hold down SHIFT during boot) and checked to see if things work?

Thanks for the quick response. It is on Yosemite. The Keyboard and Touchpad do not work in safe mode.

When did this issue start? Not working in safe mode is interesting..something within the OS is "bustigated"..

Have you tried an external keyboard & mouse? This can help determine if it's a hardware issue or not.

Also...you can install & run the free app called "Malwarebytes"...and see if it catches anything.

Started to happen this week. I ran Malwarebytes and it came back with nothing. I do have a external keyboard and mouse connected to the device (they work in the OS). The internal Keyboard and Touchpad do not want to work while in the OS. However, it will work when I hold down the Option key at boot. I can confirm that both the Internal Keyboard and touchpad work. Just not in the OS

There must be some sort of extension that was disabled. But I don't know where to look for that.

You could try downloading the compatible apple mac os x combo update and run and install it.

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

Updating the OS did not resolve the issue and resetting the NVRAM and SMC did not work either. Is there a way to disable and enable the keyboard and touchpad in the OS?

You seem to have a strange problem, but you're not the only one according to a google search, and you might want to give some of the hits a read in ase there's an option fix for you:

But this hit seems to be rather serious:

    EDIT:
Just another thought but have you tried without any USB devices connected and also with the battery removed.

And does the battery have any sign of swelling or bulging???
