MBP battery indicator always shows 100%
I have a 2-3 year old MBP, and I just recently noticed that the battery indicator at the top right corner of the screen shows the "charging icon" even when it is not plugged in, and it always shows "100%" battery life.

What could have happened, and how do I correct it?

The first thing to suspect is the battery itself. Download the free coconutBattery 2.7 from here. It will tell you if the battery is OK plus show lots of other useful info about the battery and charging circuit.

Thanks! I did as you suggested, and it shows the following:

    Battery charge
    Current charge: 4677mAh
    Maximum charge: 4677mAh
    (Indicator bar at 100%)

    Battery capacity
    Current capacity: 4677mAh
    Design capacity: 5450mAh
    (Indicator bar at 85%)

I have had the computer unplugged for about 45 minutes, so it shouldn't still be at 100%.

Could it be that I have accidentally created a never-ending power supply?! :0)

You didn't include some very important data (from Coconut Battery)...which was how many "charge cycles" does this battery have.

For those that have more knowledge then me. Do you think an SMC reset would help?
