An iMac as an external monitor ?
I'm going to be in the unusual situation of needing to check the working of a mac mini (2018) but with only an iMac available. The LG monitor I had has since departed.

Can I use the iMac as a monitor to do this ? What lead and ports should I use if so ?

What is the model year of the iMac?

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

Thanks Bob. It looks like bad news. The new iMac is arriving tomorrow am. and I'm assuming its Catalina. From your link :-

"Target display mode requires macOS High Sierra or earlier. It does not work with macOS Mojave or later."

The back story is that the iMac is my upgrade from the 2018 Mac mini which has been in to Apple for repair of a power-up issue, despite being virtually brand new. I'll be moving it on so want to be sure its working.

Are you picking it up at Apple? The stores, can set it back to factory, if that's what you need to do?

No Bob, its here now delivered yesterday. The 'old' Mac mini is still on the bench being looked at. So I'll have to go into my local Apple Store to have demonstrated it works. I can then move it on (eBay).

Yeah, I was referring to the Mac Mini. Can you have it delivered to the Apple store and pick it up there, for demonstration?

Will do just that when they inform me its repaired. Unless they offer a buyback but I'm doubting that at the moment.

Do you have a TV set with an HDMI port that you can use as a monitor?

Please verify and include the exact model/year of your Mac and OS X version number (available from "About This Mac", then "More Info" on the Apple menu).
