iMac 2019 which cpu regarding fan noise
    Hey all
Looks like I will buy an iMac 2019 in the foreseeable future. Now the question of configuration arises. It would be important to me that the fan remains quiet and then the next aspects are performance and price.
The 3.0 GHz and 3.1GHz variants have a lower TDP (65 watts) and the 3.7GHz has 95 watts. One should assume that the fan will be more quiet in the first two configurations, do I see that right? The internet also seems to think so in some places. The difference between the first two is rather marginal, isn't it?

But you can also find contrary statements, according to which the 3.7GHz as a 9th generation model with soldered heatspreader runs 10 degrees colder in these tests.

next: the 1TB SSD costs much less with the more expensive model, in the end there is only a 60Ä difference between 3.7GHz and 3.1 GHz. Now I've been racking my head for days, which is the right configuration for me.

Tasks: Lightroom (hobby, not profession) cut a little music, and the usual office and surf stuff. I'm sure all new iMacs will be able to do that.

    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Rolf

I think it really all depends on what the computer is being asked to do. All three model's internally are probably similar (same design, same cooling system, same fans). All three models will probably be equally as quiet when doing "low-stress" things.

The lower spec models (in theory) as they are asked to do more complex things should warm up faster (compared to the top end model)...and thus the lower end models fan speed would increase sooner & become louder sooner. If all three models are asked to do very complex tasks...they may all be equally as loud..since the fans on all three may hit maximum rpm's...thus fan noise on all three would be the same.

As with anything on the internet...you will always get conflicting opinions.

I wouldn't get overly wrapped up in these sort of details. Get the computer model that has the performance you need/want. Doesn't really do you any good to get a slower computer than you need...just because it's slightly more quiet (if this were even the case...which it may not be).

It may appear this way...but remember...the top end model (preconfigured) comes with a 2 terabyte Fusion Drive...the lower models come with a 1 Terabyte Fusion Drive. Thus in the top end model you're getting more "credit" for swapping out the 2 Terabyte drive...before upgrading to the 1gig SSD.

    Hey
    Thanks for your detailed answer.
    Looks like 3,7GHz to me.
    Cheers

Nice...you get the better graphics hardware as well with the top end model.

It amazes me Ap[ple is still pushing Fusion as the standard drives, particuarly the 1TB model with a tiny 24GB Blade Drive.
Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
