Question Power Mac G5 - Side door lock fell off
I recently got a Power Mac G5 for $20 (pretty good deal). However, the latch on the back of the Mac that unlocks the side panel has fallen off, and the seller said he lost the screws for it. How can I put it back in its place, and where can I get the required screws?

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Welcome to our forums.

Try eBay first. Any other instructions regarding the G5, go to iFixit: The Free Repair Manual.

If you have any older independent Mac repair places in your general area, maybe give them a call and see if the tech might have something in his goodies box along with all the other bits and pieces he might have.

If that is unsuccessful, as any good old time farmer will tell you, you can fix pretty well anything with good old bailing wire and a pair of pliers and cutters.

I hate to be a "party-pooper"...but I just looked at one of my Mac Pro's (which very likely has the same exact locking mechanism as a Powermac G5). And after closely examining things...even if the proper screws could be found/purchased...it's almost impossible to install them.

    - The lower screw hole is MAYBE possible to install a screw with a 90 offset micro screw driver (which I've never seen).
    - The upper screw/screw hole is basically impossible. Just no way for a screw driver to get in there...there's literally only millimeters of clearance.

The main problem is...everything involved with this latch assembly is either riveted or welded (other than the 2 screws for the latch handle itself). Thus there's nothing that can be disassembled or removed to allow for extra clearance to install the 2 latch screws.

    I would use Blu Tack!
    Sue

If the shoe fits, buy it in every colour.

That's a very good suggestion Sue...to use some sort of adhesive to reattach the latch!

This latch does require a decent amount of force to open/close it...so I don't know if Blu Tack has enough adhesion to hold things together...but some sort of adhesive should work.

    Great idea!

It appears that there is a solution with a complete switch being available that appears that it was started by the OP but using a different name:
Power Mac G5 - Side door lock fell off - Power Mac G5 - iFixit

Also some other extra pictures for those interested.

And I don't know if this m-f oldie would help:
