    Mac Pro wont turn on
I have a Mac Pro model A1289 with the 2.66ghz cpu, It is from a friend that passed away.
Ive got it to start up and run once since ive received the machine. Now when I plug it in to the outlet and push the power button nothing happens.. Before he passed he took the machine to a shop and they said its a motherboard problem, I'm just not sure where to start on it, could it be the power supply, motherboard battery?

    Welcome to our forums.

Your Mac Pro is probably a 2009 Mac Pro model 4,1 A1289, 2.66 GHz. (There were many A1289 models right up thru 2013.)

It could be a power supply problem as that has a rather high failure rate on older Mac Pro machines. We have some very good Mac Pro experts here in our forums so I'm going to advise you to wait and see what they have to say about it.

    Stay tuned.

I am sure not any Mac Pro guru, but I would suggest to keep it plugged in to AC power for a day or two and then try powering it up again.

I think I'd also check and make sure it's PRAM Battery is also up to full voltage specs.

Sorry, I can't recall exactly where it is located and I'm pretty sure it actually has one.

But the suggestion of a "motherboard problem" does not sound good for rescuing that Mac.

just not sure where to purchase the software

Contact Apple or just hit their App Store as they still sell the Snow Leopard 10.6.x Install disk for $20.00.

I'm not sure if it includes the classic OS 9 or not.

That MDD G4 like others like it can do:
    Pre-Installed MacOS: 9.2.2, X 10.2 Maximum MacOS: X 10.5.8
    Power Macintosh G4 1.25 DP (MDD) Specs (Mirrored Drive Doors, M8573LL/A, PowerMac3,6, M8570, 1914): EveryMac.com

One of the best Mac models I ever had BTW, and it's still down in the basement but not set up and working.

But I'm a bit confused, as how does it boot up if you [quote] have no OS for it??? The OS must already be installed in order for that to work.

Or maybe explain the problem in a bit more detail.

He says it "powers up". I don't think that means it boots up. In other words, it turns on.

    OK.

At least those Mac models had some glow lights/indicators to let you know that they were actually powered up, unlike my 2011 iMac. :-(

I'm sure you didn't intend to tell the OP to buy Snow Leopard? Since it won't work on a MDD.

Maybe you could explain why you say or think Snow Leopard won't work on a MDD.
    Hey Patrick...

What's going on with your thinking? Snow Leopard will only work on Intel machines.

Even my 1,25 MDD model was a Dual Boot model and worked very well running and booting from Snow Leopard OS 9.x.
Huh? Snow Leopard is macOS 10.6.X.

Oppps, my appologies and I really got my OS and numbers mixed up didn't I!! Sorry!!!

I'll blame the red wine and some hard brain work earlier that messed things up. Gotta blame something eh???

The latest for a MDD is Leopard OS X.5.
Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
