Strange USB port problem on 2011 iMac

    Hi all,

I'm currently struggling with an iMac which seems to have rather temperamental USB ports.

I completely restored High Sierra from the recovery partition, which was a trip in itself. I found I had to jockey the keyboard and mouse around the ports to get the system to recognize them. I ended up attaching a cheap USB hub and plugging both mouse and keyboard into it.

This seemed to work even after the restore until I left the system alone and it went into sleep mode. After that I haven't been able to get the iMac to recognize the keyboard or mouse no matter what port I plug them into.

Any ideas, anyone? This is driving me nuts.

    Thanks!

Oh, and just to add, the mouse definitely does light up when connected, so power is indeed getting to the devices.

    Thanks!

Try SMC reset - worked for me when my MacBook Air wouldn't recognize some USB flash drives
Follow these steps for iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, and Xserve.

Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
After your Mac shuts down, unplug the power cord.
    Wait 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back in.
Wait 5 seconds, then press the power button again to turn on your Mac.

Thanks, I'll try that next time. What's weird is that just a few minutes ago I tried switching the port into which I'd plugged the hub and it worked again. This makes no sense.

    Cheers

In my case, some USB flash drives were working and others not.
But when I tried these USB drives on another Mac, they all worked.

    SMC reset "fixed" that problem.

If you have another Mac, or in fact another computer, try your keyboard and mouse on that to make sure those devices are OK.

Yep, I've confirmed that all devices I've attached to those were fully functioning. I've also confirmed that it affects both Apple and non-Apple peripherals (the system came without any peripherals, and I mainly deal with PC's).

I'll try the SMC reset though - thanks again!
