Hi guys yeah that’s the message I get on the 2007 iMac

And that’s trying to get an install going I’ve not got a FireWire cable

So I can’t try that just yet

That’s how far I get with an external optical drive

Does anyone have a .DMG of the original software disk’s ?

I’m guessing that’s not allowed here but would help massively if it’s at all possible

    Thanks

The reason I asked is when I google search for that message all the results are for installing OSX on a Hackintosh. Strange.

So you got the external to read the OSX Factory DVD and it pops up that message when you try and boot? Will do some more searching as I have never had that message before.

I’ve also sourced a replacement drive to go with beside the iMac

Thanks so far for all the help

Also is the OSX DVD a Machine specific DVD or one bought from apple? The Machine specific will only install on the machine it was shipped with.

Jason. on the replacement drive, the one on my 20" 2007 failed also and I found a almost new one on Ebay. The drive in that iMac was made by Sony and not Panasonics parent company like many other iMacs.

When you try the external optical drive, what button(s) are you holding down to boot from the optical drive? C forces boot from optical drive, or option displays all bootable disks/discs.

What makes you think your DVD is damaged?

Is it scratched or physically damaged?

The reason I asked is when I google search for that message all the results are for installing OSX on a Hackintosh. Strange.

And it seems there's an unusual number of hits for Mac users as well as my search shows for:
mac OS Install "Still waiting for root device"
mac OS Install "Still waiting for root device" - Google Search

It can happen, and I have encountered a goofy CD/DVD OS X Install disk with a virgin copy Apple had shipped that would not work. Looked pristine, but a different Retail disk worked fine in the same iMac.

thanks guys for all the reply's sorry im late getting back to you

I have now ordered a replacement superdrive.

I have tried the OSX 10.6 in my 2011 iMac and it boots from the USB and the DVD so its odd.

im going to replace the hard drive I have put in there and see if it helps

but a superdrive replacement will help also.
