Well I've gone and bought a new iMac - after saying that if I were ever to change my computer it'd be for a MBP and new display!! I've had the last one for nearly seven (I think, or six maybe??) years and it's been superb. Just lately though things have started to go a little awry with more and more spinning beach balls, longer waiting to do simple tasks in Lightroom or Photoshop, etc. The old one won't be fully retired though - my daughter will be getting it for her room :-)

Anyway, I've bought the base 27" 5K model but with a 256GB SSD instead of the Fusion Drive. I've left the RAM at 8GB and will see how I get on with that before deciding whether to ugrade to 16GB or not.

Just got to wait a week or so for Apple to deliver it now. At least with all my data on external SSDs the migration process should be fairly quick and straightforward with only the Apps to copy across.

Yay - new year, new iMac :-)

Good choice Nick. I have that same machine but with a 512GB SSD. Very easy to update the memory on it, a 5 minute job. Have fun.

thanks for confirming the simple RAM upgrade I upgraded my current iMac to 16GB but I'm guessing I won't be able to take the extra RAM from my 2012 machine and pop it into the new one!!!

Hi Nicky - congrats on your new iMac!

Just replaced my aging iPad Air 2 (dying battery) w/ an 11" iPad Pro (newest model w/ no Home button, Facial ID, & USB-C port) - enjoying! Wife's iMac (late 2012) will be 6 years old this spring - upgraded to Mojave and is working fine (won't take the next macOS) - SO, we're in the market for a new iMac - plan to go w/ a SSD. Looking forward to your comments which will be helpful. Dave

There's nothing like getting something new!!

I'll be sorry to see my iMac go though - it's been fantastic. I'm hoping the internal SSD will make PS and LR run a little quicker as that's my only real grumble with my current machine. I just got a medium format Fujifilm camera and it was really struggling with the huge file sizes. Otherwise I reckon it's still got years to give. After all, my first iMac (a 2007 model) is still going strong and in daily use :-)
