    Mac Pro Broken Case Latch
Hi everyone, new to the forum and have a bit of an issue with one of my Mac Pros.

The latch that releases the side panel and hard drive bays is broken, does anyone know of an alternative way of getting in to the case?

The latch was stubbornly refusing to release the side panel... at which point my impatience made it worse.

So yeah, faulty latch + stupid heavy handed idiot = sad mac pro.

still can't get in to this case... has anyone heard of anyone having this problem before? Really don't want to take it in for repair if I can avoid it.

I don't own a Mac Pro but if the case latches are anything like the older Dell Dimension tower series, once that latch broke it was difficult if not impossible to remove the cover. Sometimes a thin plastic ruler or band could be used to push in between the case and latch mechanism to release it. If that doesn't work, you may have to destroy or bend the side panel to open it. That means a new one at your expense. $$$.

    Regards.

I have a Mac Pro (and a Powermac G5)...but I'm having a hard time coming up with a suggestion on how to get that panel off. Plus I'm not sure what exactly is broken..or is remaining.

Can you take some photos & post them so we can see what you have to work with?

BTW...Powermac G5's have the same side panel & latch design...so if someone with a Powermac G5 has an idea...please post.

    Thanks,

    - Nick

Found a solution to this problem on the Apple Support forums.

"If you look at one of your good mac pros, you'll see that the latch operates a lever that's all the way up front and you can push it with something through one of the vent holes on the front of the computer near the optical drives to operate it."

Simple but effective, I don't think I'd have ever have found that lever.

It's so easy to do I think I'm just going to leave the latch as it is.

    Awesome! Thanks for the update.

Yeah... can see how that would work...sticking something thru those holes in the front to move that lever up/down. Depending on how hard it is to move the lever (I don't open my Mac Pro case very often), I'm guessing the level could be moved in the other direction to keep the side panel in place.

    Thanks again for the update,
