So, it could be a user account setting somewhere in your user account, and the reason I suggested a NEW user account on your Mac for testing purposes. It can then be deleted when the problem is/isn't confirmed.

Me too, I only use Safari. And, I have had issues, but I believe they were all user instigated issues.

I have somewhere between 50 and 70 user accounts on Safari where I have no issue staying logged in.
Please, please tell me what it is that I could have done that prevents me from doing the same in this case.

As pm-r has suggested, trying a new user account would simply say that it is OK with that account. I would be no nearer to solving the problem.
I recall the days when it was standard to tell folks to "fix permissions". Occasionally, it actually made a difference haha!

All in good humour guys. I'm not digging anybody, but having been a Mac user since 1985, some things just "are" and one either fixes them quickly, or if they are not that important, just moves on.
This MAY be user instigated, don't know, don't care, but it falls into the "not that important" category. So unless someone says "do this, it should fix it", I'll just move on.

Maybe delete the plist file for Safari, if that hasn't been tried already?

What if it works properly in the newly created user? Then you would know there is a setting somewhere that is the issue, and it is not the Mac-Forums site? Then you could copy everything to the new user account (or not) and delete the old problem account.

Ok, I'll take a whack at it. In post #12 you said:
Autofill is the same, for cookies I have Allow from sites I visit....
Now I am on version 13, you said you are hanging back at 11, but in the Privacy tab of Preferences for Safari, that is not al option. What is there is a simple check box labelled "Block all Cookies" that is either checked or not. So where is the "Allow from sites I visit" option? It may be that the older version doesn't interact the same way with the website (Yes, clutching at straws here). However, even if Apple changed the layout, maybe changing the setting to loosen up cookies might help?

Going back to post #7 and #8, when I tried auto log in with Safari 11 it didn't work either - I had to stay logged into the forum for it to come up again automatically.
But maybe the forum logs you out after a while if there is no activity.

The privacy setting I have in Safari are attached - I think these are the default settings.
I don't use Safari so I never changed them.

OK, so Apple simplified it to a yes/no check box instead of the four options. Sort of makes sense given that the other two options don't really make any sense anyway.

I don't think the website has a timeout--at least I've never timed out here. I don't have to click on the login windows, I'm in as soon as I open the page on my Mac. I can't remember when the last time I logged in was. It hasn't been recently, that's for sure. Maybe it was the last time I let OnyX do maintenance? I seem to remember it got more enthusiastic than I remember about purging stuff, so I haven't run it again.

I'm surprised you would say that.
Why should a user allow cookies from sites they never visit?
Those cookies don't benefit the user at all - they are just injected by websites that track you on the net.

Take a look at the cookies stored on your Mac - I bet you there are cookies there from sites you never heard of.
Doubleclick got a lot of media attention a few years back, I just looked at the cookies in Firefox on my Mac, and sure enough, Doubleclick is still around.
There is also a ton of cookies from other sites I never went to. The option "Allow from websites I visit" should prevent these tracking sites from setting a cookie.

Nope. I use Ghostery and Adblock to stop ads, which is where most of those other cookies come from. The point is that the "Allow from websites I visit" ends up being bypassed by advertising, or embedded videos, or links to links to links that eventually get to where the cookie originated. So even if you select "Allow from websites I visit" the net result is that just about EVERY site you visit has links to other sites where the advertising comes from, and that ad is created and crafted so that it satisfies the "I visit" component. You said that checking that box, "should prevent these tracking sites from setting a cookie." But it doesn't, in practice. So the options are cookies or no cookies. Binary.

Now "should" it behave the way you want? Debatable, but I think, personally, it should. But in practice, you are better off blocking advertising and popups with Ghostery and AdBlockPlus, or similar. But even with those two installed and operating, I find that to do commerce over the Internet I have to allow some sites freedom to put cookies and popups in place. So I whitelist them if I know I'll be back (my bank, my credit union, my online stock advisor, etc.) and live with the resulting cookies.

So, I'm with Apple on this one. Binary. The two in the middle don't mean anything in reality.

I'm not talking about sites where ads and pop-ups would show up on your screen if you didn't use Ghostery and Adblock; these sites never show up on the screen, they just collect information about your internet activity.
And I also don't mean sites whose information might be needed to populate the website I'm visiting.
First time I noticed that was when I had a very slow internet connection - dial-up actually - and once in a while I could see these "strange" URL's show up momentarily at the bottom left of my screen as I was waiting for the website I had selected to load.

Maybe Ghostery blocks these cookies as well, you can always take a look at the list of cookies in your browser and see what is there.

But we're getting off topic again...........
