Source for Info for how this forums "Restore Auto-Saved Content" is supposed to work

As the subject says, I would appreciate if any admin or some user could point me to the source for info as to how "Restore Auto-Saved Content" works, including how it gets invoked etc., and any way to disable it or cancel it if and when when it goes Goofy, and going up for a showeras it pertains to how it is used at this site.

I've tried searching the vBulletin site but it is pretty useless on details:

It has certainly saved me a lot of work at times, but it seems so inconsistent as far as any control goes, or is there any??

I have a feeling I'm not the only member who could use some help with it.

The correct term is "Auto Save Content". The main purpose of this is..."While users are writing messages, the in progress content can be automatically saved in case the user's browser crashes or the user mistakenly leaves the page."

Additionally..."The auto-saved content is recoverable by a "Restore" button that appears at the bottom of the editor when there is content that can be used. Pressing the button will update the editor with the stored content, consisting of the editor message and the title, if applicable. Auto-Saved content is specific to the area that it was saved from."

Currently the setting for this feature on Mac-Forums is 60 seconds (every 60 seconds anything a member is writing will be auto-saved).

I guess you wouldn't know why the "Auto Save Content" when restored or any other new or replacement text won't actually get posted when the Post button is clicked??

It must have happened at least a dozen times to me with at least two different threads on the forum since yesterday. Sometimes some new text will get posted after I have hit the Cancel button.

There is no sign of any naughty words when the text won't post, or any other reason that I can see.

Just another hiccup in the computer communication world I guess.

Could it have anything to do with OS, browser? Or versions of either?

I had the same problem which I reported to our hard working admin.

It originally affected all posts, then only on and that was very persistent, effectively preventing from posting to that thread.

My only solution was to log out, clear all caches, wipe all web site data, then log in again.

This solved the problem for a time, but it recurs intermittently. It affects all browsers when it happens and when it is okay, again that is across all browsers.

Although I have been assured that the problem does not seem to be Forums related, I’m at a loss as to why it happens at all.

I guess all I need is patience

Heres an example of what my understanding is of this feature:

1. A member is composing a new thread, replying to a thread, composing a PM or PM reply...or maybe accidentally clicked on a browser back button...etc.
2. Or their browser crashes...or their computer unexpectedly shuts off...etc...while in the middle of composing the thread post/message.
3. The member reboots their computer after a computer crash or power loss...or relaunches their browser after a browser crash.
4. The member returns to the Mac-Forums home page...then navigates to the exact area they were in when the crash occurred (exact thread or PM composing area for example).
5. When the member returns to this exact area...I believe there should be a "Restore Saved Content" button somewhere in the composition window of the page (I haven't done this in a while...so the exact details elude me).
6. Click this "Restore" button...and the saved content should be returned.

- Keep in mind that up to 60 seconds of input might be lost (since this is the time between auto saves).
- Also keep in mind that this saved content feature may only work for one task. If the lost content was a reply to a thread when the crash/accident happened...and when the member returns to the site they start composing a PM before returning to that thread post...then the auto save feature may save the last 60 seconds of the PM message...which may wipe out what was saved from the thread reply the member was making before the crash.

Also remember that the site has a auto-logout feature. If a member is inactive for a period of time...they are logged out. Thus if a member was in the middle of composing something...but gets interrupted by something...they need to stop...get up...and deal with the other thing...when they return...they may be logged out.

This is another situation where this "Auto Save Content" feature comes in handy. If the member is logged out...once logged back in...they should return to the exact area they were at before the log out...click the Restore Saved Content button...and finish it up so nothing is lost.

The key here is what Nick mentioned in #4. We have had members complain about losing a post because they either were timed out or for some reason their browser failed. Unless you know exactly where you left off, the restore function will not appear.
