Forum won't remember my login

For the last few days I have had to enter my user name and password every time I enter this forum. I have ticked the 'remember me' box, deleted the Keychain Access and Firefox password entries (both of which have been recreated and are correct), run Onyx and rebooted. No problems with any other stored logins for other sites. Any other suggestions?

Try a test for us....

Switch to Safari, enter your login info as per normal, click remember me, and see if that works.

Other members have reported a problem with Firefox and stated they had to make changes to their Firefox profile info. I'm not a user of Firefox so can't be of much help there. Review previous posts to see if you can find where the fix for Firefox was given.

Hi. Thanks for this. I tried Safari (I don't use this as rule on my iMac as I just do not the tabs - pathetic i know ) and it worked as expected. I then found the post about the fix and was about to apply that when I got a notification from Firefox of yet another update - ver 67.0. Installed that and issue has been resolved.

I then found the post about the fix and was about to apply that when I got a notification from Firefox of yet another update - ver 67.0. Installed that and issue has been resolved.

Awesome...great to hear it. That Safari is working fine...and somehow there seems to be a glitch with Firefox...but is resolved with a Firefox update!

I spoke too soon. Opened mac-forums and it had forgotten my login. Only this site and only on Firefox. Bummer!

So really this thread should read "Firefox won't remember my login." I had thought it was a continuation of the problems I, and many of us were having with logging into these forums in on anything about a month or so ago.
So it's just Firefox then? Have you tried any other browsers, Opera or Chrome for example? What about iOS? Do you use iOS Firefox?

Due to all the problems I had I stuck with Safari which I had coincidentally just swapped back to after a long hiatus for other reasons. Prior to that I too had been using Firefox as my default browser on both macOS and iOS for some years.
I just opened Firefox and after a longer than usual time launching I got a message to say Firefox needed to update to Ver.67
Update now applied I tried to login to Mac Forums and was presented with a dialogue box asking if I would like to use my stored password (for my name) for this site. Interestingly I noted there were 2 in the new box which comes up. So I opened preferences went to store passwords and found that indeed there were 2. This I think was a hangover from the previously mentioned problems I had. So I checked the passwords in Enpass (my password manager) and deleted the one that was incorrect.
Then I quit and relaunched. This time I put my cursor in the name box and was presented with a little dialogue box asking if my stored information should be use so I clicked on the Remember Me box and the box with my name in it to confirm. Now that I was logged in I quit again then relaunched and this time i was logged in automatically.
So all I can do is wait until tomorrow and see if the log in sticks.
I have to say there have been a few changes since I last used Firefox even though it's been a faily short time.

Just reading the promotional Mozilla page that came up when Ver. 67 launched I notice they have a new optional feature called "Lockbox" which makes your stored passwords available across multiple devices. There are a few other new features related to security and I'm guessing that is where your problem is coming from, assuming you're doing everything else right.
If you really like Firefox (I do too) then you may need to do what I've done once or twice with Firefox and other browsers. Completely uninstall it and download a new copy. Make sure you get rid of all of it (use FAF) first. Save your bookmarks in Safari they can be reinstalled from Safari later. Passwords, if you use a password manager you can just re enter them as you need them. If you have a subscription with Mozilla then logging in after the new version is installed will restore all of your preferences, appearance, settings and extensions (if they're compatible). A bit like a clean install of macOS.

Thanks VERY much for digging into this issue in such detail Rod.

I think that with these password manager apps (although they can be really helpful)...they can sometimes make things more complicated/confusing as well. As you stated...if these password manager apps have multiple passwords stored in them for the same website...sometimes the incorrect (older) password may be auto-filled...then website visitors get an incorrect login attempt.

Combine this with:

- Apple's Keychain app.
- Cookies that are stored for websites.
- Webpage info caching by browsers.
- And how some browsers that ask you if you want login info "remembered"

...this can many times lead to incorrect login attempts.

Sometimes it's just easier to manually enter the most current username & password for a site.

In addition to what Nick stated about password managers, even Safari can become confused. It's a good idea to go to Safari's preferences and open the password manager every now and then. Check the passwords and user names you have stored there and remove those that no longer apply. For example, I noticed the other day that Safari had both my user name and my email address stored for "user name" to our forums. Your email address is not going go work and then our forum software will issue a warning about the number of times you input your credentials.

If you're a Chrome user, you check what Chrome has stored much in the same way as Safari.

To clarify. It's only THIS website on my iMac and only on Firefox - OK on Safari. If I enter my first character of my user name the full name appears. If I then click on the password field that then appears. As I only access this site on my iMac, I have no idea whether my iPhone or iPad exhibit the same problem- besides I only use Safari on those. If it continues to occur on the next release of Firefox, which should be very soon as it's been nearly a week since the last update, I'll contact Mozilla.

I have exactly the same problem - only on Firefox and only this website.
OK on Brave which is the other browser I started to use.

However, on Firefox, the log in works if I log in using the Firefox bookmark, it just does not work when I click on the link in the notification email - there I have to go through that same process every time that SawDay described.
I have tried a different Mac user account, reset Firefox, reloaded Firefox, created a new Firefox profile - nothing makes any difference.

The only reason I ask is because you certainly seem to have tried everything else and It works fine on my MBP so anything I’ve done that you haven’t might be a reason. Like emptying the browser cache which is part of the Maintenance script for internet services. Clutching at straws I know.

Are you clicking on the link in the notification email?
And are you running Firefox 67.0?

On the earlier version of FF this worked fine, and now it works fine when I click in the bookmark bar I have set up for this forum, just not when I click on the link in the netification email.

At the top right of the window I get then, I have to select my user name which actually comes up by itself as soon as I click on "User Name", then the password comes up automatically as well. Finally I select the little check box to log in automatically.
The one thing I noticed is that if one tries to log in via the notification email link shortly after one has manually logged in, then the automatic log in works, but only for a while.
Maybe that's why you have not been able to duplicate it.

PS: I just found a notification email back on May 5th that I never opened.
Clicked on the link in that email and it worked fine.
This was about 8:53pm Eastern

At 9:02pm, it's still good, but maybe I'm resetting some times somehow by logging in.
This whole scenario is just weird because I do auto-log-in on a number of other sites using Firefox and have no problem there.

Yes - see first post. Bu thaving had a Firefox update since then I'll run it again. Incidentally, it's just started happening on another site which also happens to be a forum. I get emails when that site has a new post and clicking on the link in the email used to go straight into the forum. Now it takes me to a login page. It must be a Firefox 'improvement'.
