I'll get I can't get one on Bali.
Well, for the time being all my problems have gone away. I'm now logged in to the Mac Forums app on both iPhone and iPad. Also logged in and saved in Safari on both iOS devices and my MBPr.
Why so many? Because I can't get my email client to open MF links in the app so I need Safari on the MBP whereas I use Firefox as default on my iPhone and iPad so I like to be logged in on iOS Firefox too.
Just tonight though when I opened the link in Firefox it gave me the option to open the page in the app. Is this new. It happens a with Tapatalk and other app but not before on MF's.
So given the number of different devices, browsers and apps I was having problems with its hard to imagine the current issues are due to a problem with Safari. For a while there the only place I could login was Safari on MBP.

By the way how about Practical Electronics for Inventors 4th Edition? Or do you guys already know all that stuff?

Repeating myself but for about a week - since I was asked to change password - I can't get in on Firefox.

I know this has been mentioned but with Firefox I humbly suggest you clear cookies and cache then check saved passwords to ensure the old password is not overwriting (autofilling) the new one. I deleted all of my passwords for MF from Safari, Furefox and Keychain during my episode of lockout. Honestly, I don't think the problem was at my end.

Done that, including this morning and it just won't play. I'm now also getting a message from Firefox that a web page is slowing the browser when the only page open is Mac Forums.

I tried changing the user agent (Develop menu) from Safari to Chrome.

That fixed it.

So, the website must have some Safari specific code that now causes some instances of Safari to hang. Maybe the same for Firefox.

I did have a brief look at the source code which has a zillion Safari extensions; none of which I really understand.

So, whoever is doing the website development needs to look at both the Safari and Firefox specific code.

Well guys it seems to have resolved at my end but believe me I feel your pain. What has got me puzzled (I'm not a programmer) is why if the app and or site is at fault how come its working for me now and not everybody else?
Obviously just another thing I don't yet understand I guess.

The reason is that not everyone is served up the same pages that you are. Ads are different depending on what the advertiser wants you to see. Also, the way you have your profile set up changes how the page is built.

This morning I was able to load a Mac-forum page and respond to the thread without changing the user agent to Chrome. But, for this page I needed to change the user agent.

For Safari I know that it was working without problems for me when I went on holiday on the 7th. When I returned on the 14th it was broken for me on Safari. So, some change was made during that time frame.

When you say "user agent" are you referring to your user name or something else?

To have this you need to enable the Develop menu item: Safari -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Show Develop menu in menu bar

I should note that this doesn't always work.

(How's Ubud hanging on? Haven't been there since about 2000. My wife is bugging me about a dive trip to Bali....)

Ah, of course. I use this in Vivaldi browser. I've only recently starting using Safari again as default. I gave up on it about 8 years ago in favour of Google Chrome and Netscape. So I'm still learning about its options.
Bali is good, the volcano (Agung) is still erupting gently and today is election day in Indonesia. Over 2000 candidates to be elected from local reps to the president. It will be huge. We all await the results with the hope that the incumbent (Widodo) will be returned with a decent majority otherwise we "bule" might all be sent home.

Mac-Forums is now loading properly for me with Safari on a Mac. No more freezing. No more SPOD. No more empty space in the ad area.

I wonder what it was?

I still get this error quite often:

Code:
Safari can’t open the page “[url]https://www.mac-forums.com/forums/search.php?do=getnew&contenttype=vBForum_Post”[/url] because Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server “[url]www.mac-forums.com”[/url].

As soon as I switch to a VPN, it opens right up.

Yep. Same problem. I clicked on the link in the email on this thread. Safari appeared to open the page, but as soon as I moved the cursor over Safari, the SPOD appeared and Safari locked up.

This reply is being written from Chrome.

I have no problem with other websites in Safari.

I'm having some problems here too. iOS app refuses to log me in. Cant load images in Safari on MBP. Definitely something going on. Having a lot of trouble replying to PM's as well.

Definitely something going on.

Right. I tried to do a traceroute to see if I could figure where the hangup is. Oddly, it gets bounced around several NTT servers in Tokyo after which the traceroute simply fails after 64 hops. This is probably because the site's firewall blocks the ICMP port. Even using mtr using UDP or TCP didn't work.

And, just now, I got this:

Code:
[B]Safari can’t open the page.[/B]

The error is: “The operation couldn’t be completed. Protocol error” (NSPOSIXErrorDomain:100)

Then, when I tried to load the site using just the IP address, I got this:

View attachment 30022
But, that's probably because it's shared hosting with several sites using the same IP.

My problem seems to be different but the bottom line is a few of us seem to be experiencing problems similar to earlier this year. The worst part of it for me is there seems to be no consistency. M-Forums app on my iPad now working, iPhone app now not working. Safari on MBP was working now not working again (not accepting same login used on iPad) Firefox is working (with AdGuard on) I haven’t even tried an iOS browser yet. Also no longer receiving emailed post notifications. I’ll check my user prefs on that one.

I agree. No consistency. Sometimes the site loads right away, sometimes not. Usually, for me, turning on a VPN causes the site to load instantly. Sometimes I get an error message, sometimes not. The error messages are different.

My guess is that it is a routing problem of some sort.

It might have to do with the Securi Website Firewall that this site uses.
