used this site for many years, I had no idea this site was loaded with ads. until I turned off the ad blocker because I was trying to trouble shoot a browser issue.

Be honest. does anyone here EVER click on an ad? I know I don't. that being said, why would anything think that banner ads work?

Unless I'm totally wrong and everyone here loves ads and clicks them all day long. lol.

Not totally wrong...but partially wrong!;)

Website revenue is NOT only via clicking on ads...it's also via ad impressions. And yes...some ads do get clicked on...and that does generate revenue as well.:)

seems that clicking an ad could be dangerous.... you never know what URL you will be sent too. that is one reason I always avoided it. :)

Understandable. The vast majority of ads are legit (at least what is seen at Mac-Forums)...since the ads are vetted for legitimacy by the advertisement provider before being sent to websites for visitors to view. If you see an ad for "Best Buy", "Ford", various website hosting companies, food items, and "OWC" (an excellent ventor that specializes in Apple/Mac products)...you will be sent to the company website for each of these companies.:)

I really can't see any advantage for anyone to hijack the URL for any advertisers ad. What would be the point unless it was for a similar competitive product, but then it would be pretty obvious as to what they had done. :Smirk:

The problem is not the hijacking of the url. More likely the problem would arise from an ad that looks legit but goes to a copycat site that harvests personal information for nefarious purposes.

I only click on ads by accident.

Keep in mind that ads on our site helps to pay the bills. And like Nick said, the ads that we have are safe.

I notice that most are also often related to one's actual location rather than in some location we Canadians can't make use of which is a nice touch.

Also, the ads that do show are quite minimal in the number that show up compared to some similar type sites that become completely obnoxious.

Hey Sue:

One of these days, post a couple of photos of your shoe collection. Should be interesting. :)

BTW, my daughter buys her shoes off the internet all the time. She always seems to get a good fit.

Wonder if we might encourage a subscription ad-free version of the site? I have no idea how hard that might be, but I could be talked into supporting something like that to get rid of the ads rather than just blocking them and having the site lose the revenue.

Jake:

That's exactlty what the old "Premium Membership" accomplished. We also gave that privilege to the "Member of the Month" winner. Nick and I have discussed this in the past and maybe we can get our heads together along with the rest of the staff and come up with something. Not sure if it's doable any more but we will sure take a look at it.

Thanks for the suggestion Jake.

Yeah, I was a "premium" member, even had it set up in PayPal to make the payments. Then the site owner quit billing, so PayPal didn't pay any more. I think it's worth considering, if the technology isn't too complex to implement.

I think reestablishing & revamping the Premium Member program is a great idea. Got to work out the details & timing.:)
