Safari and Firefox complain that this website is not secure.
and there is no lock on the address bar or no sign of a valid certificate. Is there a reason why?

Asked and answered in great detail already: http://www.mac-forums.com/security-a...te-secure.html

Yes, Mac-Forums does not employ a SSL certificate and thus isn't using HTTPS.

We are currently working on getting that fixed. Since this site does not offer software, financial data, or otherwise sensitive data, there should be no problem.
