Word for Snow Leopard- formatting change! Help!

I was using Microsoft Word for Mac OS X with a newsletter template and had just completely finished the document around 7 pages total. I had been saving all along when I realized the formatting of one of my text boxes was skewed. A green box appeared around the text box when I tried to fix it and a number to the top left corner of the text box, also green. I reformatted the box, clicked save, then realized the formatting on the rest of my document was skewed. The first several pages of the newsletter have been replaced with fragments of the latter pages and the initial writing is gone. Pictures are still present, it's just the formatting and text. The replacement text is fragmented and there are several lines of just repeated single digit numbers. How can I fix my document?? What's wrong with it?
