If any of you still even remember what that means... I'm looking to buy ( or have) a Sonnet G4 Encore processor upgrade to get some more life out of my G4 Sawtooth, that I bought originally on this forum almost 8 years ago, my first mac...

If any of you happen to have one that you're willing to part with, I'd love it, because my girlfriend just needs a computer to do research. Also, I could use some RAM for it too. It takes pc 133 sdram.

Also, I've been meaning to fix the screen on my powerbook g4 12 in. If anyone happens to have an extra screen or parts laptop, I'd be interested in buying it.

Just trying to keep reincarnating these old macs. Gotta love it.

And to that end, I'm also looking for an old mouse and keyboard of the same vintage, if anyone else has one laying around.

This is the sort of upgrade you are after:-

NewerTech MAXG47D1600 MAXPower G4/7447A Dual 1.6GHz... in stock at OWC

Used on on a MDD G4 when Leopard was released. Whilst it did work okay and ran Leopard, still bogged down by the slow system bus speed. Sawtooths are worse with a PC100MHz bottleneck.

If you can get you hands on a new one may be worth the investment.

I thought about that, but at that rate I might as well buy a G5 or an older Intel iMac. I was hoping someone on the forum might be able to help me do this on the cheap.

No such thing as on the cheap with Macs. Your best option would be to look for a later model Intel machine. The day of PowerPC are over. Also the two latest operating systems, Lion and Mountain Lion, will only run Intel software. When you consider a late model, 2009 say, iMac will bring about $500 or so, not that much dearer that the CPU upgrade quoted.

Maybe I'm just old school, but I like still running my PowerPC machines. My dream computer would be a cube with the sonnet upgrade, Apple made some of their best machines during that generation.

I've moved onto intel on the notebook side but my primary desktop is still at G5 and it runs leopard just fine for casual everyday use and for storing data.
