shut down problem!?!

MACBOOK PRO 2.6ghz 4gb ram
For some reason my mbp wont shut down i have force quitted any programmes but when i go to shut down it goes to the 1 minute countdown i click to do it now and the bar at the top disappears but thats it the dock at the bottom stays if i then click anything the top comes back!? any ideas so i can shut it down! Thanks
