I am gonna be picking my 24" iMac up at about 3:30 today. What should be the VERY first thing to do, either for fun or for functionality.

I already have some widgets lined up to put on it.

I dont have any super fanTabulous Imac specific ideas, but when i get a new computer I usually get it up to speed in terms of software, so probably download Azureus, VLC, toast titanium... with a 24incher maybe you want to do some film editing, or try and take over the world; there are a lot of great things you can do

Good luck on the new iMac - I am sure that today will be very exciting!

The first thing? Get it out of the box and onto the internet and then post here from it (...of course!! :D ).

The second thing? Take a few photos of the new set up and post them here in The Official Setup Thread!

Enjoy!!

Quite literally, (and no offense or snideness meant by this) read the User Manual.
Then read through this: Switch 101
and then read through this: Mac 101

Bookmark those two links after you have turned the computer on and set up your internet access.

I don't know about everyone else, but the first thing I did was to uninstall the Microsoft Office demo and download OpenOffice.org, which I replaced with NeoOffice a few weeks later...

But really, as to what you should do first? Seriously, just boot 'er up! It's quite a fun setup process. Just be prepared if you're sensitive about what you look like -- if your Mac has a camera, it will attempt to take a picture of you. It was unpleasantly startling to see my fat ol' face on my monitor!

Creating my user account on Tiger on my new iMac was about the most exciting part to date. I've never had to take a photo of myself during user creation process for the account pic. Felt a bit James Bond-esk!
