file size is a function of compression and of song length.

are you ripping songs with itunes? in the settings you should be able to find the compression you're using (i'd guess it's 128 by default - for smaller less quality file sizes). what kind of music do you listen to? are the songs generally about 3-4 minutes in length, or are many of them considerably longer?

i have 32,871, or 86.7 days, or 165.22gb. I dont care how much space it takes up, if I fill up ill buy another HDD.

My advice to the OP, get an external that is more than 30gb, it will fill up FAST

No wonder your drive is filling up, that is about cd quality there. Drop them down to 128 and it will save you a lot of space. Wouldn't go any lower in the mp3 format as the quality really gets bad.

Look for a program called Max, you can find it here:

http://sbooth.org/

It will convert them down for you simply put in the levels you want. Works great been using it for over a year to drop 613 meg .wav files to 78 meg mp3 files for podcast.

Wait a minute... i hesitate to ask, but how big are the actual files now size wise? What format did you save them in and what bitrate? A normal sized song of 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 minutes saved at 128 bitrate would come around 3 to 4 meg or so, what are the ones you did?

Ok, sounds like you did it right. I was a bit leary when you said something about 300bit... You could have saved a tad more by going to 128 bitrate without any great quality loss, but 160 is close enough.
