I'm wanting to convert the default icons on the Desktop (i.e., Macintosh HD, folders, etc.) to Photoshop icons. Problems is JPEG, PNG, etc always leave white background behind image. How can I stop that from happening to create clean cutout images as icons instead of squared icons?

create a clipping path around what you want to keep?....I don't know if that works with icons..never created an icon...but you'll have to make a path around the image you want as your icon (nixing the white space of course)..then you'll have to save the path, and then you'll have an option to create a clipping path....

PNG is the format to use; just make sure you turn on transparency when you export it to a file.
