Will Brightness Control screw up my iMac's monitor?

I got a new iMac, and since my room isn't well lit, even the lowest brightness level in iMacs are still very bright.

So I tried using Brightness Control and it works perfectly. However, it seems to play with the hardware, not software.

My friend (a mac power user) told me I shouldn't mess with this kind of programs that alter my hardware settings.

Is this true? would it hurt my monitor in the long run?

Your help is much appreciated. :)
