Stacks question

When I drag a folder to my dock, is it like making an alias? I'd like to have my entire photos folder as a stack. But I don't want 8 gigs stored on my desktop. Is this the case?

when you place a folder in the dock - it is not just copying the folder

Just to make that a little bit clearer. No its not copying the file. A stack is just an alias.
