I just found out you're supposed to tip for a haircut. My aunt cut my hair for free until 1992 and I've been using barbers ever since. I had no idea

Well if your Aunt is located in NA, you better settle up. If not, you have nothing to worry about. Btw, how many hair cuts would that have been?

Wow, $8 tip for a $12 cut? Generous!! The place I usually go costs $15 and I usually give $3 tip.

What does everyone else tip? I've never really known what is appropriate, but though 20% was decent.

My cuts cost me $16 or so, and I usually round it up to an even $20. I'm a nice guy like that :)

We also tip our waitresses, cabbies, cleaning ladies, auto detailers, delivery boys, and baggage handlers. Heck, these days even the frickin' fast food employees have tip jars out.

Yea, I didn't know either. My mom was a hairdresser. She cut my hair for most of my life. I've been to the barber once and didn't know I had to tip. I cut my own hair now and it turns out great. It's also nice saving that $20 a month.

I usually get my hair cut ever 1 and a half months and get charged 16 dollars. Then give a 4 dollar tip, so i end up spending around 20$ .

You should tip anyone who provides you with a personal service or attention.
Waitstaff, Barbers/Hairdressers, Restroom Attendants, Valets, Delivery people, Tattooists, Piercers, Maids, Masseuses, Bartenders, Manicurists, Taxi drivers, Baggers, etc.

It is called proper etiquette. :)

And no, you don't have to tip the kid at Mickey D's (et al).

Mom cuts mine as well.. thankfully she only lives 5 minutes away. But at her shop they charge 40 bucks for a mens cut and usually most leave a 10 dollar tip. At least thats what she tells me. 20 to 25% is greatly appreciated.

I know about tipping everyone except the Tattooists, and the Piercers since i don't deal in that area. i believe the delivery people, would be the pizza man/woman.

I always assumed tips were for people who did things I could do myself. That would include bellhops, waiters/waitresses and the like. I guess that's why I never thought to tip the person that cuts my hair. I can't do that.

How much do hairdressers make anyway?

i pay $35 for my haircut and tip and $10 since we're on that subject.

and like DB, I tip everybody who provides a service if they provide it well.. the nicer they are about it the higher the tip.. I've even gone so far as to tip somebody $10 for a $4 drink because i felt they were nice enough to deserve it.

My last haircut I paid $12 with a $3 dollar tip. She didn't do a good job though. It's normally $5
