I created a how-to movie with iMovie 08 that is 15 minutes long. I want to split it into two parts so I can upload each part to Youtube or a similar site (most limit length or file size).

Before I realized the YouTube 10-minute limit I uploaded the movie to there - and it was rejected, of course. I also exported it so I have a .m4v version on my hard drive.

I looked up how to split the project into two parts in the iMovie help files and it says to select the clip that will begin the new project and then go to file ->split event before selected clip.

I tried this. I opened the project, found the clip I wanted to start the second movie with, and then went to file-> but "split event before selected clip" was grayed out, not clickable. What am I doing wrong?

I had this problem and I went around it the long way, making a copy of my movie and deleting everything after the 10 minute mark - I know I know - there HAS to be an easy way.

I can't gurarantee it but try going to SHARE - QUICKTIME - EXPERT SETTINGS and compress it as a Quicktime movie which shouln't take more than 1 hour at the very most.

Then... Open a new, empty i-movie project and drag your Quicktime version from Desktop or wherever you saved it (Desktop nice & easy) into the clips pane then timeline and just cut in half as a whole.

I hope that works for you - if it does it will be the first time I have been able to help anyone out regarding a Mac.

Thanks! I did happen upon the "copy and delete" method, and remembered doing that with another movie program. So that's what I am in the process of doing right now. I also created a Quicktime movie but haven't tried what you suggest - I was just hoping it would be small enough to upload somewhere but it isn't enough smaller (about 3/4 the size of the other).

So so far so good! Thanks again.
