NeoOffice IS OpenOffice for Mac. See first reply. I'm not super crazy about NeoOffice (even if we do share a name), but the price is right, and it is compatible with not only Word but WordPerfect too (hey, it's important to ME).

Apple includes a 30 day trial too. So you can probably ask them as well.

I suppose you could, but it would be a very short conversation.

You: "Hey, Apple? Why do you bundle this free trial, instead of the $500 full version?"
Apple: ...

Macs have TextEdit with is free. And I guarantee you that if your last computer had the full version, you paid for it whether you realize it or not. They don't include it out of the goodness of their hearts. ;)

TextEdit is plenty more powerful than notepad. TextEdit would be comparable to Wordpad.

If you need more power, NeoOffice is a great free alternative to MS Office. I have completely switched to iWork (Pages) as it's faster, lighter, and does everything I need with far more elegance.

Why not pony up the $79 for iWork '08? You get a full featured word processor, spreadsheet app, and slideshow app that is fully compatible with all Microsoft Office document formats....and it's pretty!

I use NeoOffice...
I don't really like it, but its free...

sometimes it does not "behave" like MS word - sometimes it gets a bit frustrating

TextEdit comes on your mac, it's basically the equivalent to Notepad
